On-Demand Zones

On-Demand Zones incentivize the use of on-demand services, which can be agency-operated or partnerships with private providers such as Uber, Lyft, or taxis.  Passengers call or use an app to summon a vehicle to take them to their destination.  Reservations are usually made with an app on a smart phone, but anyone with a regular telephone will be able to make a reservation.

Trips are subsidized, but typically the fare is higher than for a regular bus, as curb to curb service is a premium service. Fares can be paid with a credit card or with a cash equivalent.

Three different on-demand zones are envisioned in Scenario 1:

  • West Hillsborough Road / Bennett Place On-Demand Zone:  This on-demand zone replaces daytime Route 6 service and evening Route 11 service.  This zone will allow for connections to either Route 6 and 11 will be
  • East Durham On-Demand Zone:  This on-demand zone will supplement Route 3B service and replace Route 3C service.  This zone will allow for convenient connections to Route 3, 3B, and 3C at The Village.
  • Late Evening Owl On-Demand Zone:  This on-demand service will provide service for trips between 12:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. when regular GoDurham service is not available.  Any origin or destination within ¼ mile of an existing GoDurham route would be eligible for this service.
