In response to strong community support for safer multimodal travel options in northeast Austin, and to advance Austin’s Vision Zero goals, the City of Austin is making safety and mobility improvements along Cameron/Dessau Road between East 51st Street and Parmer Lane. Austin crash data shows that nearly 100 people are injured or killed in traffic crashes along the Cameron/Dessau Road corridor every year. This project will bring a substantial redesign to improve safety for everyone using the corridor.

The project includes a variety of treatments to improve safety for all road users. Recognizing that Cameron/Dessau Road is an important motor vehicle connection in northeast Austin, staff took extra care to design a concept that is expected to maintain similar motor vehicle capacity while significantly improving safety and access for all people using the street.

The project is funded through Austin’s 2022 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant and 2020 Mobility Bond funding from Bikeways, Vision Zero, Transit Enhancement, Safe Routes to School, Sidewalks and CapMetro.

Approximately six months after major safety improvements were completed on Cameron/Dessau Road, early data shows fewer crashes, fewer injuries, and less speeding along this high-crash corridor. Read the July 2026 update to stakeholders. 

Improvements

• Intersection safety improvements, including curb ramps and signal work at Braker Lane (south), Meadowmear/Arborside Drive, Camino La Costa, Cross Park Drive, and Ferguson Lane 
• Signal head upgrades at Dungan Lane, Wandering Way, and Braker Lane/Shropshire Boulevard 
• Roadway resurfacing and restriping (53rd Street to Glenwood Drive)

• Transit improvements (Reinli Street/Northridge Drive, Glencrest Drive, northbound Briarcliff Boulevard, Corona Street, southbound Cross Park Drive and Ferguson Lane)
• Intersection safety improvements at Reinli Street/Northridge Drive, Clayton Lane/Briarcliff Boulevard 
• Pedestrian crossing islands at Larkwood Drive, Yorkshire Drive, Berkshire Drive and Glenclest Drive, including a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon at Glencrest Drive 
• Shared use path at various locations 
• New lane configurations and physical protections for bike lanes (US 290 to Parmer Lane)

The Cameron/Dessau Road project has been shaped by community input over several years. Initial feedback gathered during a 2019 listening session helped identify key safety, accessibility and mobility needs along the corridor. Additional public engagement in summer 2024 provided updated input that informed the current design and construction approach.
