About the Plan

The Recreational Trails Plan will serve as the local government's guide for trail management, maintenance, and development. Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions (AMATS) and the Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department are updating the Areawide Trails Plan from 1997 to reflect modern trail needs and plan for the years ahead.

Project Milestones

The Recreational Trails Plan update is off to a great start in 2024. An online survey received 2,056 responses and 79 people attended public workshops in Anchorage and Chugiak. Participants highlighted key issues like funding for maintenance, missing connections, and safety on trails. Top priorities shared by the public include connecting and expanding multi-use trails and improving trail conditions through maintenance.

Looking ahead, the project team will begin stakeholder interviews and review trail classifications and design standards in the first quarter of 2025. Stay tuned for public workshops and more chances to shape the future of our trails!
