Slow Streets Pilot Program, Belle Grove (August-November Evaluation)
Slow Streets Pilot Program, Belle Grove (August-November Evaluation)
In an effort to make Fort Smith's streets safer for all users, the city has launched the Slow Streets Pilot Program in the historical Belle Grove district. The goal of Slow Streets is to promote safety and walkability, particularly on residential roads with schools, parks, and other points of interest within the community. To accomplish this goal, there are speed advisory signs in the streets with a posted 15MPH speed advisory. By slowing down cars, we hope to address the needs of our community through increasing safety, accessibility, recreation, and mobility. The pilot program will go from August 18- November 15.
Your input during the pilot program is vital. Once you have read the description of the program below, please offer your input by clicking the link to the survey at the bottom of the page.
Slowing Cars Saves Lives
Tragically, the annual number of fatalities from motor-vehicle crashes has increased by 45% nationwide from 2010 to 2019 (see the study Dangerous by Design from Smart Growth America). In 2021, the Department of Transportation estimated 42,915 people died in motor vehicle crashes, a 10.5% increase from 2020. This is a devastating trend that shows America's roadways are in a crises. While there are many things that are contributing to this crises, speed is one of the primary factors at play. Considering what is at stake, it is time for our communities to emphasize safety over speed on residential streets.
The graphic below describes the difference that speed makes in motor vehicle collisions. When cars slow down, even at increments of 10mph, the chances for pedestrian survival in a collision increase drastically.
