Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization (Triangle West TPO) partners with Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) to host the 2026 Triangle Regional Transportation Safety Summit on Tuesday, December 8 at the McKimmon Center in Raleigh. Join us for a half-day program to explore the very different aspects of transportation safety. No matter if you are a student, safety advocate, transportation professional, you will be able to find relevant topics and make connections with others in the field. This event is bringing together municipal leaders, transportation professionals, and community partners across the triangle region to share highlights of local initiatives, updates of policy changes, various perspectives of transportation safety regarding equity, communication, emergency management and more.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS ROUND 1:

Speed Safety Cameras in NC School Zones

• As of October 2025, NC communities are authorized to use speed safety cameras (SSCs) to enforce reduced speed limits in school zones. This session will cover the basics of the law, recommended practices for deploying effective SSC programs, and considerations for communities who may be pursuing SSC program adoption.

Vision Zero in NC Overview 

• In this introductory session, participants will learn about Vision Zero and the principles of a Safe System approach. Participants will also learn how this initiative has grown and been implemented across North Carolina. Designed with county commissioners, planners, and other local leaders in mind, this session will highlight cross-sector roles, practical ways to get involved, and how communities can build partnerships and make the case for participating in North Carolina’s Vision Zero efforts.

Planning for People with Disabilities 

• A guided conversation centering people with disabilities and their experiences in traveling across the Triangle region. This session is designed for attendees to have a better understanding of different types of disabilities, how they may impact a person’s ability to travel, and most importantly how we can keep people with disabilities safe via policies and infrastructure. 

NCDOT Safety Panel Discussion

• This session will feature panelists from NCDOT’s Highway Division Offices and the Traffic Safety Unit. The discussion will focus on the role of safety in the planning and design of transportation projects, and the collaboration and coordination needed between State and local governments. 

BREAKOUT SESSIONS ROUND 2:

Community Voices: Safety Planning through Community Organizing 

• Community organizations can be an important voice in helping plan safe and equitable communities.  This breakout session will introduce examples of community organizations in the Research Triangle that have had success with identifying road safety issues, and working with their local governments and other partners, to make our roads safer for all users.  Attendees will learn strategies, best practices, and challenges from community organizations who have embarked on safety planning efforts.

Improving Roadway Safety Through Partnerships with Fire, Law Enforcement, and EMS  

• Safely accessing and using the region’s transportation system is of upmost importance, and it requires communities and the region working together for quality-of-life improvements.  This breakout session will focus on Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, and Firefighting professionals sharing their perspectives on roadway safety, as well as the opportunity to partner with transportation professionals to improve roadway safety throughout our region.

Safety Infrastructure Funding and Local Ordinances 

• CAMPO staff will address current funding sources available for safety projects, as well as the development of the Traffic Analysis and On-Site Development Ordinance Template being implemented within the CAMPO Blueprint for Safety Program.  Staff will address questions raised regarding scope of the traffic analysis and mitigation requirements within the study area, as well as provide clarification regarding speed controls on ADA designated paths as included within development regulations.

Safety Storytelling: Strategies to Improve Road Safety and Culture Through Communication

• The language we use to talk about crashes shapes our communities’ sense of ownership, power, and efficacy to prevent these tragedies from occurring. Join this session to learn about communication and outreach strategies for traffic safety and hear from local media professionals.
