SURVEY: Tryon Street Pilot Plaza
SURVEY: Tryon Street Pilot Plaza
The City of Charlotte aims to create welcoming, equitable and people-centric spaces in Uptown. To that end, we are gathering feedback about people’s experiences at the pedestrian plaza on South Tryon Street. The increase in community interest to visit the Black Lives Matter mural located on South Tryon Street presented an opportunity to test a pedestrian-only public space in Uptown by closing the street to traffic.
We want to hear from people with a variety of experiences – those who have visited the street closure and pedestrian plaza, those who work or live near the plaza, those who have not visited the plaza and/or who plan to visit. Your feedback will help inform our decision-making as we look to the future of creating a more pedestrian-friendly Uptown, at Tryon Street and beyond. (image from Charlotte Star Room)
Many cities have taken the plunge to convert streets to plazas, finding that these projects support local businesses, foster neighborhood interaction, enhance pedestrian safety, encourage non-motorized transportation and reimagine the potential of city streets. An example of a street-to-plaza conversion is Atlanta's Broad Street Plaza. These spaces are meant to be flexible, accommodating for everyday use, special events, and festivals.
As the City of Charlotte implements this pilot plaza project, programing and additional elements will be tested within the parameters of the COVID-19 guidelines outlined by the State of North Carolina.
