Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace the bridge on U.S. 17 Bus (W. Queen Street) over the Pembroke Creek in Chowan County. Two Alternatives are being considered:

-Replace the bridge in place with an on-site detour to the north side. The bridge would be replaced in-place with a modern two-lane bridge with 12-foot travel lanes and 2-foot paved shoulders, with a raised 5.5-foot concrete sidewalk on the southern side.

-Replace the bridge in place with an off-site detour along U.S. 17, N.C. 32, and U.S. 17 Business.

Project Highlights

The existing bridge has a roadway width of 28-feet with two 12-foot lanes and 2-foot paved shoulders. Raised concrete 3-foot sidewalks are in each side of the bridge.

The bridge would be replaced in place with a modern two-lane bridge with 12-fot travel lanes

The proposed bridge would be 314 feet in length and would have a 28-foot clear roadway width, and a 33.5-foot deck width.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road

project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right
