The City has selected Kittelson & Associates to lead in updating its Traffic Calming Policy and implementation process.

Background

Originally established in 2014 to enhance neighborhood livability and traffic safety, application of Asheville’s current Traffic Calming Policy has become increasingly resource-intensive, often leading to long project timelines and unmet community expectations. To address these challenges, the City is embarking on an initiative to develop a comprehensive Traffic Calming Guide and an updated policy framework. This project will explore additional treatments for traffic calming in addition to the currently used speed humps and speed cushions, redefine street eligibility, and establish a clear prioritization methodology for implementing traffic calming treatments. The update aims to create a more efficient, transparent, and responsive system for managing vehicle speeds and volumes on residential streets. Once a qualified team is onboard, the project is expected to last approximately 12 months.
