Traffic Calming Policy Update
Traffic Calming Policy Update
The City of Asheville is revising its existing Traffic Calming Policy to provide clearer direction for community members to request traffic calming treatments and for staff to respond to requests.
Happening Now
The City is working with consultant Kittleson & Associates to gather input from the community and develop a draft traffic calming policy. Thanks to all who attended the May 28 meeting. If you missed that, you can review the infographics and share a comment below.
Background
Originally established in 2014 to enhance neighborhood livability and traffic safety, application of Asheville’s current Traffic Calming Policy has become increasingly resource-intensive, often leading to long project timelines and unmet community expectations. To address these challenges, the City is embarking on an initiative to develop a comprehensive Traffic Calming Guide and an updated policy framework. This project will explore additional treatments for traffic calming in addition to the currently used speed humps and speed cushions, redefine street eligibility, and establish a clear prioritization methodology for implementing traffic calming treatments. The update aims to create a more efficient, transparent, and responsive system for managing vehicle speeds and volumes on residential streets.
