Austin 3-4 Dwelling Unit Technical Code Update
Austin 3-4 Dwelling Unit Technical Code Update
Austin is proposing updates to the International Residential Code that would reduce the plan reviews needed for buildings with three or four dwelling units, as long as safety requirements are met.
The proposal includes several provisions to support occupant safety in three- and four-unit structures, including:
- Maximum building size of 6,000 square feet
- Fire-resistant separations between dwelling units and shared exits
- Automatic sprinkler systems
- Additional fire-safety requirements for garages, carports, and wooden decks
Curious residents and developers can learn more and provide feedback on the proposed code amendments here through Nov. 27. Learn more and provide direct feedback during a Nov. 12 virtual meeting. (Meeting registration information follows)
