Public Meeting

February 1, 2024

4:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M.

Gate City Baptist Church

5250 Hilltop Road

Greensboro, NC

Project Overview

The N.C. Department of transportation proposes to convert the at-grade crossing of the North Carolina Railroad/Norfolk Southern Railway mainline Hilltop Road in Greensboro to a grade separation. The project is needed to reduce the potential for roadway vehicle/train collisions at the crossing as traffic volumes increase. The purpose of the proposed project is to improve safety along the rail corridor and provide access to safer crossings by converting the existing at-grade railroad crossing at Hilltop Road to a grade separation.

Project Highlights

A public meeting was held in March 2018 that presented four alternatives that were then under consideration. Although the proposed roadway typical section did not change from what was presented in 2018, revised design includes shifting the alignment of Hilltop Road to the south to improve sight distance for cars and trucks accessing D.H. Griffin and adding another driveway access point.

Project History

In addition to safety, other benefits include increasing the efficiency of trains along the Piedmont Corridor from Raleigh to Charlotte. The Piedmont Corridor consisis of the Greensboro to Charlotte portion of the NS Washington, DC to Atlanta, Georgia mainline and the NCRR H-line that travels between Greensboro and Raleigh.

Project Map

Typical Sections

The proposed typical section for Hilltop Road is comprised of two 6-foot-wide berms, two 5-foot-wide sidewalks, two 2.5-foot-wide curb and gutters, two 5-foot-wide dedicated bike lanes, four 12-foot-wide travel lanes, and a variable 0-12-foot-wide center turn lane median.

The typical section for the proposed bridge is comprised of two 5.5-foot-wide sidewalks, two 2-foot-wide gutters, two 5-foot-wide dedicated bike lanes, and four 12-foot-wide travel lanes. The total width of the bridge is 73 feet with 54-inch high pedestrian-safe railings.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
