Routes 190 and 192 proposal
Metro’s Proposal for Routes 190 and 192
King County Metro is working to connect Renton, Kent, Auburn and the surrounding areas with high-quality, frequent, and reliable bus service. As part of this effort, Metro is developing the Renton-Kent-Auburn Area Mobility Plan (AMP) in south King County. Changes to fixed-route service would begin in September 2020, and the RapidRide I Line would begin service in 2023.
How does Metro make decisions on service changes?
Metro develops service changes by using service design best practices, considering equity, and seeking public input on what communities need from Metro. Final changes to service are subject to approval by the King County Council.
- Service design best practices include standards such as: routes should serve multiple purposes and destinations, be easy to understand, and match service types to demand;
- Equity includes using our data on family-wage jobs, community assets, and census tract demographics. Metro completed a network analysis to compare the number of jobs and community assets that priority areas can access within 60 minutes in the AM peak, midday, and night. Priority areas are census tracts having higher concentrations of people of color, low-income people, and people with limited English proficiency;
- Public input included 40+ hours of onboard surveying, 697 completed online surveys, which were translated into Spanish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Russian, and Somali, and engagement with local community-based organizations.
Current Route 190: Redondo Heights P&R – Star Lake – Downtown Seattle
Proposed Route 190: Pathway Unchanged - Frequency Change
Current Route 192: Star Lake – Downtown Seattle
Proposed Route 192: Pathway Change Redondo Heights – Downtown Seattle via Military Road - Frequency Unchanged
Routes 190, 192
Today, Route 190 begins service at Redondo Heights Park & Ride, serves Star Lake Park & Ride then enters I-5. Route 190 then enters Downtown Seattle via the SODO Busway. Route 192 begins service at Star Lake Park & Ride, serves Military Road and Kent/Des Moines Park & Ride, then enters I-5 for direct service into northern Downtown Seattle via Seneca Street.
Service between Route 190 and 192 will be consolidated, but the same number of trips will operate from Redondo Heights Park & Ride to Downtown Seattle.
- Route 190 will be reduced to four trips in the morning and four trips in the afternoon.
- Route 190 will continue the same pathway as it does today.
- Route 192 will continue to have to four trips in the morning and four trips in the afternoon.
- Route 192’s pathway will be extended and will begin at Redondo Heights Park and Ride.
Riders will have the option to travel directly to northern Downtown Seattle via Seneca Street on Route 192 or travel directly to southern Downtown Seattle via Sodo on Route 190. Travel times for both routes between Redondo Heights and Downtown Seattle are expected to be similar. Route 192 has additional travel time in Kent due to serving Military Road, but will have faster routing into Downtown Seattle.
This change will also provide additional service from Kent/Des Moines Park & Ride to Downtown Seattle.
This proposal is a direct recommendation we received from participants of our survey during our Fall 2019 engagement and demonstrates Metro's committment to using community feedback to shape the service concepts.
