UPDATE 3/24/2021 - The Vance Monument site on Pack Square could be redeveloped following a community visioning process approved by Asheville City Council March 23. The Council approved removal of the monument as a first step.
UPDATE 2/1/2021: The VMTF is having a final meeting on Thursday, February 4 at 4:30 p.m. to approve the final report and close out the work of the task force.
Final Report and Recommendations
UPDATE 1/7/2021: A bid process will be advertised Friday, Jan. 8 for demolition of the Vance monument. Once bids are received, they will be reviewed by staff. As with all bids at this expected dollar value, City Council will need to authorize the contract at a City Council meeting before demolition could begin. The bid process brings forth important facts that can inform the decision of whether or not to authorize the work.

The final meeting of the Vance Monument Task Force will take place from 4:30-5:30 on Thursday, November 19.

The public comment period will close at noon on Wednesday, November, 18.
UPDATE: Upcoming Meeting Reminder
The next public meeting of the Vance Monument Task Force will take place on Thursday, November 12th. In the interim, taskforce members will continue working in small groups that do not constitute a quorum.
UPDATE: Opportunities for Community Engagement
On June 26, 2020 the Board and Commission Committee voted on the formation of a joint task force with Buncombe County for the removal or repurposing of the Vance Monument. The Vance Monument Task Force is composed of 12 people, six (6) appointments from both the City and County respectively. In addition, the task force will identify and recommend African Americans to honor the local history of Asheville-Buncombe County and develop an inclusive community engagement plan focusing on those most harmed or negatively impacted by the Vance Monument.
