Corridors of Opportunity includes funding to implement public space and placemaking projects along the Beatties Ford Road corridor from Highway 16 to I-85. This public process will ensure this is done equitably and represent the goals of the entire community. It will also provide a framework for future investment and project funding. This project will be done in two parts. The first part will be completed on your own time. The second part will be a community virtual workshop on Saturday, February 27th from 9am-12pm. You may participate in Part I and not Part 2, but must participate in Part 1 to participate in Part 2.

Please also complete the survey to get assigned a segment of the corridor and register for the Community Virtual Workshop. Materials will be provided to you by email when you are assigned a segment.

Our neighborhoods, our communities, our cities are all shaped by people. The places where their stories are written and shared are essence of cities. Placemaking embodies the reflective and playful aspects a city’s public realm – the physical space between buildings where life happens. Placemaking is a collaborative process where communities can shape the public realm to maximize shared value, with emphasis on physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its evolution. Capitalizing on the underutilized public land or privately-owned land with willing partners along the corridor can create opportunities for local businesses, neighborhoods, and organizations to build community together.

Building upon the planning efforts along Beatties Ford Road, a key implementation priority is to showcase the corridor’s unique history and character through the implementation of meaningful placemaking projects that addresses identity, culture, and public spaces. The project will be a collaboration between project partners and the Charlotte Urban Design Center to identify opportunities and projects in the Beatties Ford Road corridor that can be quick wins in the near term, or future public space opportunities in the longer  term. The projects identified should be rooted in the core values of Placemaking (inclusive, community driven, and quick) and leverage the skill set of the corridor’s neighborhoods and local businesses.
