Wake Bus Rapid Transit New Bern Ave
In November of 2016, Wake County voters approved a plan to expand and better connect the public transit network. The Wake Transit Plan identified transit improvements, including the implementation of four (4) Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors.
Understanding the benefits of including local culture, history, and art into community projects, the City continues to identify opportunities for art integration within the Wake BRT corridor projects. Art can transform civic spaces, foster shared community interactions, and celebrate unique stories and collective history. Furthermore, high-quality art and design can improve the customer experience and increase ridership while creating a sense of identity and adding vibrancy to transit systems.
This public art project is a part of the Wake Bus Rapid Transit Program.
About the Artists
In Fall 2021, Calls for Artists were published for the purpose of hiring North Carolina artists to create artwork along the Wake BRT: New Bern Avenue corridor. After reviewing all application submittals, semifinalists were chosen and interviewed by selection panels. The selection panels consisted of representatives from St. Augustine University, the Public Art and Design Board, New Bern Avenue Corridor Alliance, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee, and local artists and community members. About Raleigh Public Art
Mission: To create and integrate diverse artworks into Raleigh's landscape in order to establish a vibrant visual environment that provides public places with civic distinction, as well as fostering meaningful connections between people and place.
History: In 2009, the City of Raleigh adopted ordinances creating the Percent Art Program. The program allocates 1% of funds from capital construction projects for public art. The Atlantic Avenue Public Art Project is funded by the 2017 Transportation Bond. Capital Improvement Projects that meet the Percent for Art Ordinance standards, such as this one, are eligible to use 1% of construction funding for Public Art. Inclusion of aesthetics and artwork is an investment in our communities, with a focus toward community identity and equity in quality of life. Communities gain cultural, social, and economic value through public art.
About Transportation
The City of Raleigh's Transportation Department consolidates transportation and related infrastructure. From planning transportation projects, system operation, and infrastructure maintenance, the department works to optimize service delivery and position the City for ongoing growth. Services provided by the department include transportation planning, traffic engineering, transportation field services, parking operations, GoRaleigh transit services, and highway maintenance.
