Briar Creek Greenway: Central to Monroe

Briar Creek Greenway, from the existing greenway at Masonic Drive to Monroe Road, will provide 1.6 miles of new greenway. Briar Creek flows from east Charlotte to Little Sugar Creek Greenway at Tyvola Rd. The planned project, from Central Avenue to Monroe Road, has been divided into three phases to allow the project to move forward and provide the time needed for real estate to be acquired and for coordination with the NCDOT Hwy 74 and CATS Silver Line projects. A Notice to Proceed with construction was issued on August 18, 2025. The trail area will be closed when construction closure signs are posted, which may be around the end of 2025, date TBD by the contractor.

Phase 1: Briar Creek Greenway, Bay Street in Chantilly to Monroe Road began construction in Summer 2025 and is anticipated to be complete in Mid-late 2026. This section of greenway is projected to be 0.5 miles long and have access points at Laburnum Ave, Chantilly Park, Bramlet Rd. and Monroe Rd. This section will go along a predetermined alignment through the ecological park. The greenway construction area for each phase will be closed during the construction.

Phase 2: Briar Creek Greenway, Masonic Drive/Central Avenue to Morningside Dr. is currently in design and projected to add 0.8 miles of greenway. The schedule for construction has not been determined.

Phase 3: Briar Creek Greenway, Morningside Dr. to Bay Street is currently in design and projected to add 0.3 miles of greenway. This phase is planned to include a more formalized and accessible connection to Bay St. The schedule for construction has not been determined. Coordination with NCDOT is necessary to extend the greenway under Hwy 74.

July 17, 2026 Update:

NEW: the artist designing the public art component of the project, Jim Gallucci, will be leading a community engagement conversation and walk on site, hosted by the Arts & Science Council (ASC), on Thursday, August 27th from 6-7pm. The flyer is forthcoming; but please hold the date if interested.

Unexpected soils and rock issues with the pilings for the greenway bridge across Briar Creek between the Monroe Road/Bramlet Road trailhead parking lot and the main trail continue to hamper construction on this phase of the project. Additional structural engineering design was completed and four of the five required pilings have been embedded; but the final piling has proven difficult to set, and additional review is needed prior to further construction. However, the design and construction team continues actively moving the project forward toward completion as soon as possible.

Most of the asphalt trail has been completed between the Bay Street junction and the playground area of Chantilly Park; please note that this is an active construction project site and not yet open for use.

June 11, 2026 Update: The greenway trailhead parking lot at the Monroe Road/Bramlet Road intersection has now been paved, along with some of the trailhead greenway itself (see photos below). An update to the design of the northern bridge abutment is under review. Please be reminded that it's an active construction project site and not yet open for use by the public.

June 2, 2026 Update: Although much of the Phase 1 main line greenway has now been paved (see photos below), please be reminded that it's an active construction project site and not yet open for use by the public. The trailhead parking lot on Bramlet Rd. is expected to be paved the week of June 8th. And although the bridge has been placed on the construction site we have run into difficulty with the bridge's pilings. Our engineers are working on options and we hope to resolve this issue as quickly as possible so the bridge can be set over the creek.
