Destination Zero is the effort that will put us on the path towards reducing and eventually eliminating all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries from our roadways.
What is an acceptable number of deaths and serious injuries on our roadways? The Sarasota/Manatee MPO believes that the only acceptable number is ZERO. Destination Zero is the effort that will put us on the path towards reducing and eventually eliminating all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries from our roadways. The first step in achieving this goal is the development of an Action Plan that identifies implementable strategies focused on the 6E's:
- Engineering
- Education
- Engagement
- Enforcement
- Emergency Response
- Equity

Destination Zero Action Plan
On February 28, 2022, the MPO Board adopted the Destination Zero Action Plan: The Sarasota/Manatee Path to Zero Fatalities and Serious Injuries. The Action Plan is the result of months of hard work, public outreach, research, and coordination between MPO staff, elected officals, the public, regional and state partners, and other stakeholders. Moving forward, the MPO is working with its juridictional partners to adopt the Action Plan or adapt local versions to meet local needs.

Project Schedule
The develoment of the Destination Zero Action Plan took place through calendar year 2021 and was completed and presented to the MPO Board in February 2022. The following timeline indicates when key events, including public and stakeholder involvement, and deliverables occured. Details including specific dates, times, locations, and platforms for events, particularly public involvement opportunities, will be posted on this page well in advance of the events.
About the Sarasota/Manatee MPO
The Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization is the regional transportation planning entity for Sarasota and Manatee Counties. MPOs are established by state and federal laws and through interlocal agreement to provide a process for local governments within the region to coordinate with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Long Range Transportation Plan
The Transform 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) presents the transportation safety action plan and improvements needed today and in the future to help move people and goods safely and conveniently about the community. Being able to safely move around the region supports the creation of vibrant places, promotes equitable transportation choices, and increases the accessibility of goods and services.
Safety as a Performance Measure
The MPO is working to improve safety for all walkers, bicyclists, and drivers.
The goal of the Safety | Security performance measure is to improve the safety and security of the transportation system for all users. Focusing specifically on the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), five performance measures have been established for evaluating safe traveling conditions on the highway system. The goal of the HSIP is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads and is supported by the following five performance measures established under MAP-21.
- Number of fatalities
- Rate of fatalities (measured against roadway traffic volumes)
- Number of serious injuries
- Rate of serious injuries (measured against roadway traffic volumes)
- Number of non-motorized (bicycle and pedestrian) fatalities and serious injuries
