Energy Savings Tips for Summer Heat

It’s already been a hot summer and by far, the largest part of your energy bill comes from your home’s heating & cooling system! Did you know every degree of extra cooling is estimated to increase energy usage six to eight percent? Here are some tips to save energy and money this summer:

  • Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
  • Fans cool people, not rooms, so turn them off when you leave the room.
  • Use an outdoor grill to cook dinner and keep excess heat out of your home.

All Way Stop Study is Complete

After gathering data and conducting observations during the all way stop study, Town of Apex staff recommended against the all-way stop control at the intersection of Salem Street and Chatham Street, and requested that NCDOT restore traffic signal operations.

Now What? The stop signs were removed from the overhead lines, covers were removed from the pedestrian signals, and the traffic signal and pedestrian signals were returned to their normal state. Traffic engineers will continue their work to redesign that intersection as part of the downtown streetscape project.

New Traffic Signal Updates

Beaver Creek Crossing - Construction will begin soon to prepare for the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Beaver Creek Commons Drive and Zeno Road. Signalized crosswalks will also be included in this project. We expect to begin signal installation by the end of the year, due to a long lead time in needed materials.

Green Level Church Road - A signal is planned for the intersection of Green Level Church Road and Jenks Road. Currently, we are awaiting completion of road widening by an adjacent developer, and the relocation of utilities by Duke Energy. We hope to see this project completed this fall.

Harris Plant Siren Testing

Because Apex is within a ten-mile radius of the Harris Nuclear Plant, dozens of warning sirens are placed throughout town, in the unlikely case of an emergency. These sirens are maintained by Duke Energy, and tested quarterly to ensure that they are working properly. The next test will occur on October 12th around 10 am. This particular test is the annual full length test, so expect to hear the siren for about three minutes. Learn more through this guide.

Duke Energy now offers a texting tool that notifies you of emergency preparedness information, including siren test reminders. Text Harris to 71729 to enroll!
