CLT Busier as Spring, Summer Travel Begin

Spring and summer travel is bringing flyers back to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in increasing numbers. Vaccines are rolling out and it is great to see passengers have confidence to travel again. That also means our efforts to provide a safe healthy travel experience are paying off, and passengers can be assured it remains a top priority.

Nationally, the Transportation Security Administration screened 1,580,785 passengers on April 2, which is 1,118 percent higher than the 129,763 travelers the same day a year ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic; and 56 percent lower than the more than 2.5 million travelers the same day two years ago, prior to the pandemic.

Charlotte Douglas is averaging around 17,000 daily originating passengers going through the checkpoints with a high of 25,232 people screened on April 2. On the same day last year, at the start of the pandemic, 2,060 passengers went through the checkpoints. In 2019, a record-breaking year for CLT, 28,679 passengers were screened. *Numbers do not include daily connecting passengers.

Our COVID-19 response remains strong. Cleaning, both regular daily cleaning and nightly deep cleaning, is our new normal. Social distancing is encouraged throughout the Airport, the federal mask mandate remains in place and our Airport partners are doing their part too by adopting touchless purchasing technology. Even the air in the terminal is cleaner thanks to bi-polar ionization technology that scrubs viruses and bacteria from the air and hospital-grade MERV-13 air filters.

As you make travel plans in the coming days, be prepared to find a very busy Airport. Unlike smaller airports where passenger traffic may remain low, CLT is a the second largest connecting hub for American Airlines. As a result, more people come thought CLT each day than some travelers expect.

Here are some tips to make your travel more enjoyable.

Travel Guidance

  • Check travel guidance before you leave home. Your airline may require COVID testing or proof of vaccine, or in some cases you may be required to quarantine at your destination.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the TSA are good resources to start your planning.

Before You Leave Home

  • Check to latest TSA travel tips and requirements for your home and destination airport. Many checkpoints have new requirements for going through the screening process to protect passengers and TSA officers.
  • Book your parking ahead of time. You can guarantee yourself a spot and a set rate by using CLT’s online booking. You can even pay online ahead of time so there are no worries at checkout.
  • As part of your pre-planning, you can now check wait times at the security checkpoints. Pick the one with the shortest line for a quick and easy screening process.

At the Airport

  • Face coverings are required during every step of your journey from the parking facilities and shuttle buses to the terminal and aboard your flight. Remember to please cover your nose and mouth.
  • Hand sanitizing stations are provided as a courtesy to everyone and are located throughout the terminal for your convenience.
  • It can be hard to social distance in a crowded airport. Throughout the pandemic we have not gained space, but we have gained space awareness in the terminal. We encourage passengers to take charge of their personal space. Here are some tips for social distancing that that might help.

Concessions Are Open

Most dining and retail businesses in the Airport are open. Many have installed plastic screens to help create space and others offer touchless ordering and paying options.

New in the Airport is our third Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, which opened in early February on the Concourse A Connector, and later this spring Summer House begins serving mouth-watering burgers on Concourse B.

If you have time and are interested in shopping "local," look for the teal and white CLT Local seal at establishments that are either Carolina businesses or offer products made in South and North Carolina.
