Milestone Canopy Construction Starting
Upper Level Roadway Closing for 2 Weeks
Today, Charlotte Douglas International Airport announced a major milestone in the terminal renovation - work has begun on an exterior canopy that will transform CLT's appearance and will welcome customers in a grand way when construction is complete in 2025.
Because of the construction, passengers flying out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Airport employees who park offsite and shuttle to the terminal need to add extra time to their travel beginning next week.
Starting Tuesday (Sept. 27) night, all lanes of the upper-level roadway (drop off lanes for check in) will close. All traffic will be directed to the lower-level roadway. Signs and fencing will help guide customers coming to and from the terminal. Please plan extra time for traffic congestion on roads leading to and from the terminal as well as on the lower Arrivals/Baggage Claim level.
An important milestone in the Destination CLT portfolio of facility improvements, the road closing is in preparation for work on a sweeping canopy that will transform the front of the CLT terminal.
“We’re very excited about what the end product is going to look like,” said Chief Operating Officer Jack Christine at today's announcement. “We know the next two weeks are going to be a challenge for our customers. But this is a necessary step, and we want to install the canopy trusses as safely as possible.”
Passengers and Airport workers should expect:
- All vehicle traffic to be directed to the lower level (Arrivals/Baggage Claim) for drop off and pick up.
- All airline curbside ticket counters/check-in will close. Passengers will need to allow time to check-in at their airline's ticket counter.
- Daily North Lot will become a temporary cell phone lot to help alleviate traffic congestion. The current cell phone lot will close.
- Express Deck shuttle buses will pick up and drop off on the lower level (Arrivals/Baggage Claim) in the Zone 2 bus lane. This also affects any other employees who park at Express Deck 2 off of Harlee Avenue and shuttle to the terminal.
- Curbside Valet check-in has relocated to the first level of the Hourly Deck. Follow signs to the new location. A temporary check-in counter will open inside the lower-level subterranean walkway to assist with check-in/checkout operations.
- A special assistance area is designated in Zone 2 on the lower-level public vehicle lanes. An attendant and special seating will be available. Signs will help direct customers.
The upper-level roadway will reopen at 4 a.m. Oct. 12.
