Meter System Upgrade Project Now Underway
Beginning in December 2024, the Town of Apex will begin replacing most water and electric meters as part of our Meter System Upgrade project. This effort will span 12-18 months, reaching every Apex utility customer.
Project Background
While this complex project has been in planning stages for several years, the work officially kicked off in September 2023. Like all technologies, regular advancements are made in electric and water service delivery. The upgraded meter system will increase efficiency for town staff, and provide customers with better insight into their utility usage.
What You Can Expect
Depending on your current meter hardware, work could include the replacement of:
- Water meter endpoint (all customers will need a new endpoint, the device attached to your meter that transmits utility usage data to our meter reading equipment)
- Water meter + endpoint (about 25% of customers will need a full meter replacement)
- Electric meter (most customers will need a new electric meter - this work begins early 2025)
The Town’s contractor will replace your meter equipment. A crew member will knock on your door when they arrive. If no one is available to answer the door, they will leave a door hanger explaining the work that was completed.
