Town Board Adopts FY26 Budget

The Huntersville Town Board of Commissioners voted to adopt the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget in June, and the full budget is now available on our website. The adopted budget represents continued investment in public safety, infrastructure and community services, and reflects the Town’s commitment to responsible growth, fiscal stewardship and quality of life for residents.

A highlight of the adopted budget includes no tax increase.

Mecklenburg Co. Resources in Extreme Heat

During extreme high temperatures, Charlotte-Mecklenburg government agencies and partners are highlighting services available to assist vulnerable residents during times of extreme heat. Public Health recommends that residents take extra precautions as heat-related illness can be more severe as the body temperature rises:

  • Limit physical activity outside
  • Drink plenty of water and limit alcohol use
  • Stay cool in shaded areas outside or with fans or air-conditioning inside
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes outside

Status of County-Wide Referendum for Mobility

Mecklenburg County reports, the Board of County Commissioners will hold a special meeting on July 30 to finalize the wording for a proposed referendum. A public hearing is set for August 6, during the regular Board meeting, where residents can share their thoughts before the Board votes on placing the referendum on the ballot.

If approved, the measure would introduce a 1-cent sales tax dedicated to funding transportation improvements across the County, including upgrades to roads, rail, and buses. Read more.

Spotlight on Sustainability

Encounters with wildlife remind us that we share our town with remarkable wildlife. However, as development expands and trees are cleared, animals are losing vital habitats and safe passage.

When wildlife corridors are fragmented, animals are forced to move along riskier paths and cross dangerous roads to access food, water, shelter, and mates.  Sadly, vehicle collisions are a leading cause of death for many wildlife species, especially in areas where tree cover has been cleared and safe crossings are limited.

Our wild neighbors – turtles, fox, deer, owls, and many more – deserve safe passage and access to dedicated, natural habitats.  With thoughtful land use, land preservation, and individual care, we can help protect animals, as they have a unique path and purpose in our shared ecosystems.

How your Environmental Sustainability Committee is helping wildlife:

  • Developed NEW wildlife-related, safer-driving guidance for the DMV Driver Handbook in collaboration with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, DMV, and Governor’s Highway Safety Program
  • Recommended ordinance updates to further protect tree cover

  • Ongoing research on wildlife migration and conservation opportunities

How you can help wildlife:

  • Drive slower in neighborhoods and rural areas
  • Scan roadsides for movement and eye shine
  • Voice your opinions in favor of wildlife-friendly policies
  • Donate your land for conservation

You can learn more about the ESC on the Town’s website. You can reach out to the ESC directly by emailing ESC Chair Jeremy Shook or stopping by one of their monthly meetings.

Huntersville Town Board of Commissioners 2024

Decisions from the Dais

The Town Board of Commissioners approved at their July 15 meeting to give the Board of Adjustment duties to the Planning Board. The Board amended the Huntersville Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance by re-designating the Board of Adjustment duties to the Planning Board.

At the same meeting, the Board approved the purchase of furniture for the new Town Hall which is under construction. There was a 4% savings by ordering in July.  Staff reported this purchase allows for a move-in timeline at the end of 2025. Learn more on our website.
