Don't Fly by the Seat of Your Pants
Summer Travel Expected to be Busy at CLT

More than 430,000 people are expected to fly to, from and through Charlotte Douglas International Airport Thursday through Tuesday during Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer travel.

Demand to fly is anticipated to surpass pre-pandemic travel.

American Airlines average daily departures will increase from about 560 flights per day currently to more than 600 a day through summer. CLT is American's second largest hub and largest air carrier by passenger volume.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Security Administration expects Friday will be the busiest day of the Memorial Day weekend, preparing to screen 2.6 million people at airports nationwide. Along with TSA, CLT recommends fliers sign up for TSA PreCheck®, which helps expedite the screening process. And you get to leave your shoes on.

"Our strong partnerships with airports and airlines will ensure we are able to anticipate and respond to changes in passenger travel throughout the summer," said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. "Passengers can help as well by being prepared, by having their identification ready when they begin screening and checking to make sure they aren’t bringing firearms, oversized liquids or any other prohibited item into the checkpoint. One person’s actions can delay screening for everyone else.”

Pack Your Patience

The Airport will be busy all summer long. Expect crowds and long lines.

Plan ahead for ongoing construction at the Airport. New ticket counters opened in March for Delta, Air Canada, JetBlue, Contour, Frontier, Southwest and United airlines.

Book it. Then Park it.

Visit parkCLT.com or the CLT Airport app to book parking online when you book your flight, before you get to the Airport.

Reserving your space ahead of time guarantees you have a place to park, especially when parking is in high demand, and you could save a little bit of money through online discounts.

It's Bumper to Bumper

Allow extra time to drive here. Traffic on roads and highways leading to the Airport could be congested.

@AskTSA - What Can I Bring?

Always check your bags before you head to the Airport for items such as weapons and liquids that are not allowed on your flight. Weapons are strictly prohibited at CLT and through the checkpoints and having one could delay getting through the security screening process for you and others.

Visit tsa.gov for information on what's allowed.

Check Security Wait Times

Estimated wait times for each security checkpoint are available on cltairport.com and the CLT Airport app. Remember, any checkpoint gets you to any concourse. Check wait times online often as you make your way to the Airport.

Are You Here Yet?

It's better to be too early than too late. Be in line at the airline ticket counter or security checkpoint at least two hours before a domestic flight, and three hours before international travel.
