Hello D6,
We're in the first weeks of the new Council session and one of the first orders of business is the reappointment of boards and commissions members.
|
|
|
|
D6 has always had the best, most dedicated, and experienced volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to make our community great. I am very grateful for their advice and guidance. This week I was happy to appoint and reappoint 15 community members to various boards:
Kathleen Davis to the Animal Care Services Advisory Board
Dan Rossiter to the Brooks Development Authority
Jesse Zuniga to the Building Standards Board
Bert Pickell to the City/County Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs
and the Parks and Recreation Board
Richard Vasquez to the City of San Antonio Commission on Education
Laura Lopez to the Disability Access Advisory Committee
Myrl Britten to the Linear Creekway Parks Advisory Board
Dr. Emily Fleisher to the San Antonio Arts Commission
Michael Valdez to the City of San Antonio Higher Education Student Advisory Board
Fernanda Maria Cardenas to the San Antonio Public Library Board of Trustees
Gabriela Smith to the San Antonio Youth Commission
Yaritza Cruz-Villarreal to the San Antonio Youth Commission
Walter Rogers to the Veterans Advisory Commission
Kin Hui to the Zoning Commission
Michael Hogan to the Capital Improvements Advisory Committee
Help thank them for their service to our community, and if you happen to see them around D6, make sure to tell them they are appreciated.

While we’re on the subject of boards and commissions, there is a great opportunity for anyone interested in serving on the Citizen Advisory Action Board (commonly referred to as the Complaint & Administrative Review Board - CARB).
There are several vacancies on the CARB that are scheduled to be filled in October 2023; we ask that anyone interested in being considered for appointment in October submit an application by September 25.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
I also want to express my thanks to 436th District Court Judge Willam “Cruz” Shaw for working with me to forge a plan of action to address our community’s increase in juvenile crime.
The plan has several working parts which we outlined in an editorial that was published this week in the San Antonio Express News. Our city has experienced a staggering 94 percent increase in juvenile felony referrals from 2022 to 2023. The effects of the COVID lockdown are still being felt, our children are in urgent need of support. We must act quickly to fill the gaps in school enrollment and mental health care outreach.
You can click on the graphic below to read the plan.
I will keep you informed on the next steps we’ll be taking to put our plan to work.

Be sure to put a big circle around August the 19th on your calendar!
The start of the new school year is right around the corner and we’re here to help!
Your District 6 team and I are preparing our Back-to-School Readiness Bash with our friends at Hallmark University, Blue Cares SAPOA Outreach, San Antonio Professional Fire Fighters Association, San by Antonio Police Department, and many more!
We will be giving away FREE backpacks, school supplies, and haircuts provided by Cut & Shave Barber College to help students look their best for the big day, we partnered with San Antonio Metro Health to administer vaccines and SA Ready to Work will be there with resources and case managers to help those needing assistance.
Make sure to tell all your family, friends, and neighbors that you don’t have to live in D6 to attend this event. It’s open to everyone in the city.
There is a lot to look forward to and I am excited for you to join us!
Mark your calendars:
August 19, 2023, from 10 AM to 2 PM
Hallmark University, 9855 Westover Hills Blvd

I also want to send a quick heads-up to everyone in D6 who uses and depends on the Great Northwest Library.
The GNW Library will be temporarily closed due to maintenance.
The work will include interior painting, restroom renovations, new fixtures, and parking lot restriping. The GNW Library is scheduled to close on August 7, 2023, and is expected to be closed for 8 to 10 weeks.
During the closure period, neighbors are encouraged to use the nearby libraries. The GNW book drop-off will remain open.

This week we celebrated a perfect way to fill two San Antonio needs: carports for shade with solar panels to generate energy.
These new solar panel parking shade structures were installed at the La Hacienda de Los Barrios on Redland Road. They have more than 400 solar panels and provide shade for 56 cars.
Thanks to CPS Energy for supporting and encouraging energy innovation, to the Barrios family for their investment, and to Big Sun Solar for providing the technology!

Another cause for celebration this week was the re-opening of the Walmart store on 1604.
The store has been undergoing remodeling and upgrades and this week it opened its doors again for D6ers!
That part of the District had been growing at a fast pace in the last 10 years and many families have been shopping there because it’s a place they know, close to where they live.
Walmart has been a great corporate citizen. During the tragedy at Rob elementary in Uvalde, Walmart donated bottled water for the community and police officials from throughout the state who were there in the aftermath. My staff and I drove trucks filled with the donated water to Uvalde and their generosity was felt by many.
I know that in order for families to thrive in District 6, business has to thrive as well. So I was honored to help cut the ribbon and wish Walmart good luck!

Here’s a great example of D6’s whatever-it-takes energy to make our community better!
We spent last weekend shoveling and spreading soil to even out the ball fields at Cuellar Park. It was a small way to show our support from the families and Little League teams who use the facility. But the result is huge!
We couldn't have done it without the support of our AMAZING volunteers! Thank You!!
Shout out to the San Antonio Police Department, the Safety Corp, San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, The Edgewood Girls Softball team, and the San Antonio Brahmas for all your hard work and help to ensure our fields are ready to go this season!

Always dispose of pesticides properly
Pesticides and herbicides can be a convenient way to protect plants from pests and weeds. But when used or discarded incorrectly, these chemicals pose great risks not only to our ecosystem and wildlife, but also to our water, soil, air and human health.
The best way to avoid the perils of pesticides and herbicides is to stop using them altogether. But if you must use them:
- Always carefully read the product label and follow the disposal instructions exactly.
- Only purchase what you need and use it until it’s gone to avoid leftovers.
- Never discard these items in your trash bin for regular collection.
- Don’t ever pour them down sink drains, toilets or storm drains.
Pesticides and herbicides must be disposed properly at a household hazardous waste site. For a schedule of monthly drop-off events, visit sa.gov/swmd.

Animal Care Services joins Daisy Cares to feed hungry pets in San Antonio
Pet food donations sought as holidays near and needs increase
The San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) team is joining Daisy Cares, a local non-profit, to host a holiday pet food drive that will help both organizations support pet parents in need by filling their pet pantries.
Bags of dog and puppy food are especially needed in addition to other new or gently used pet items. All donations will be divided between the Daisy Cares pet food pantry and the SAACS Community Animal Support and Assistance (CASA) program, which uses a case management approach to assist pet parents in need with food, humane care support, and veterinary resources.
Residents can bring pet food donations through the end of November to Animal Care Services during regular business hours. SAACS is located at 4710 State Highway 151 and is open on weekdays from 1 - 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends (except on City holidays). All donations are tax-deductible.
