Construction begins to address gap in Shoal Creek Trail
The City of Austin is addressing the last major gaps in the Shoal Creek Trail between 24th Street and 34th Street. Construction on the “Middle Gap” is set to begin shortly along Lamar Boulevard between 29th Street and 31st Street. The forthcoming work will tie in to recently completed safety improvements on this historically high-crash area of Lamar Boulevard.

PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS
-
New paved trail with a buffer on the west side of Lamar Boulevard
-
Convert existing paint and post median to concrete
-
New southbound left turn lane on Lamar Boulevard at 29th Street
-
Close existing southbound left turn from Lamar Boulevard onto San Gabriel Street
-
New pedestrian crossing at Lamar Boulevard on the north side of 31st Street
-
New bicycle-accessible push buttons on both sides of 31st Street to activate the crossing beacon across Lamar Boulevard
-
Sidewalk improvements on the east side of Lamar Boulevard and San Gabriel Street

INSTALLATION
Work on traffic signals has begun at 29th St and Lamar Boulevard. Construction on other project elements is anticipated to begin in November 2025 and last for approximately one year. Left-turn access will be phased so that the new southbound left turn onto 29th Street will open before the existing southbound left turn onto San Gabriel Street is closed.
