Playable Sound Sculpture to be Unveiled on Reed Creek Greenway
Join us in celebrating the installation of a new, interactive piece of public art on the Reed Creek Greenway in North Asheville. A ribbon cutting for the sculpture will be held where the greenway intersects with Catawba Street on Oct. 20 at 5 p.m.
Functioning as both a striking visual landmark and a playable musical instrument, the sculpture was designed and fabricated by artists Nick Geurts and Alex Irvine, who were commissioned by the City of Asheville following a competitive call-for-artists process. The installation features custom ceramic tiles handcrafted by Asheville residents during multiple community tile-making events held in 2023 and 2025. Did you create a tile? Design Phase Continues on Reed Creek Greenway Northern Extension Project
In late 2025, the City began design on a project that will extend the existing greenway from its current terminus at W.T. Weaver Boulevard and Broadway Street, heading north toward Riverside Drive and ending at the I-26 ramp. This addition will create a vital connection, enhancing pedestrian and bicycle access between North Asheville, the UNC Asheville campus, and the city's downtown core. Following the finalization of design plans, construction will begin on the extension, likely in late 2027.
