Dear Neighbor,

In case we haven't met, I am City Councilwoman Dr. Sukh Kaur, your voice at City Hall. We are currently bringing on new staff members to serve you and your neighbors. You can look forward to working with a dedicated team of public servants, each of whom brings tremendous talent to the office. Our office's guiding "kaur" value is "Overcommunicate!" Please hold us to that standard.

Thank you for your trust.

Yours in public service,

Property Tax Savings Coming Your Way

Homeowners can look forward to greater savings on the City portion of their property taxes this year! City Council recently approved an increase to the City's Homestead Exemption. The Homestead Exemption is now 20% of the home's appraised value — the legal maximum that the City can offer residents.

How much savings should homeowners expect? Here are some estimates based on your home's market value. Note: these are only estimates.

If your home has a market value of $100,000, you would have saved $53 without the increased homestead exemption. Now, you'll save about $108. If your home is valued at $200,000, you can expect to save about $216 (up from $106).

This is an important tax relief measure for District 1 since 1 in 4 homeowners are considered "housing burdened." This means they spend more than the recommended 30% of their income on their mortgage and housing needs.

P.S. Remember that the City is only one of the organizations that your property taxes go to. Your taxes also go to Bexar County, the River Authority, and taxing entities.

Funds Awarded to Help Non-Profits Serve Our Community

City Council recognizes the critical role that non-profits play in serving our most valuable community members. That's why I was excited to support providing $5.1 million to non-profits who serve seniors, homeless and opportunity youth, and people with chronic illness and substance use issues, among others.

Here's a summary of which non-profits received some extra support. This funding was provided to the City by the federal government to help us recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. This is one of several rounds of funding the City awarded.

Pride in District 1

D1 PRIDE

It's inspiring to see so many people show up and loudly affirm that everyone — regardless of who they love or how they identify — is loved and belongs in our community. 💜 Let's continue to fight against discrimination and push for inclusivity. Happy Pride Month!
