Winter Weather Reminders

As we enter the winter weather season, we have few reminders to keep you safe and assist our front line personnel in providing important services.

Snow and ice removal

  • Hendersonville Public Works provide snow and ice removal on City streets, while NCDOT is responsible for state-maintained roads. Visit the city's Snow and Ice Removal webpage to learn more about the process and view snow removal zones.
  • Hendersonville Public Works staff prepare equipment for treating streets and conducting snow and ice removal. Two things that residents and businesses can do to assist are:
    • If snow is predicted, residents are asked not to park vehicles on the street when possible. This allows snow plows to more easily clear snow from the streets.
    • If snow is predicted, businesses in the MSDs (Main Street and 7th Avenue districts) are asked to clear everything off the sidewalks to assist downtown crews with snow and ice removal efforts.

Winter weather preparedness

  • Know your winter weather terms, monitor forecasts, and sign up for weather alerts. The City offers National Weather Service alerts through the AlertHVL notifications. Sign up for alerts.
  • Prepare your home and vehicles for winter weather:
    • Winterize your home by using insulation and weather stripping.
    • Take steps to prevent water pipes from freezing.
    • Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and safely operate heaters and generators.
    • Keep up with vehicle maintenance, keep gas topped off, and maintain an emergency supply kit with jumper cables, sand, flashlight, etc. in your vehicle.
  • Make a kit and have a plan
    • Build an emergency kit for your family that includes water, non-perishable food, medications, battery-powered or hand-cranked radio, cash, and other supplies. You should be prepared for at least three days, and possibly longer if you live in a remote location.
    • Make a plan that includes how to communicate, where to meet if separated, and practice the plan with your family.
