CLT Preparing for Holiday Crowds
Charlotte Douglas International Airport is expecting 1.6 million local and connecting passengers to fly out between today and Jan. 3. That’s up 13% from last year and 9% above 2019.
Roads will be busy, and there will be a lot of people in the terminal. CLT is preparing to assist those holiday travelers.
"Thanksgiving was a challenging time on the roadways and we recognize the challenges our passengers experienced. We feel the adjustments we are making will help," said Chief Operating Officer Jerome Woodard. "We’ve identified short-term operational adjustments that will be implemented for the winter holiday travel period."
- During peak traffic times, some Airport shuttle buses, to include employee buses, will be re-routed to reduce roadway congestion.
- CLT is adding staff on the curbside to assist customers.
- Signage along Josh Birmingham Parkway will be updated to communicate approximate travel times.
- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, N.C. Department of Transportation and Charlotte Department of Transportation are partnering with CLT to help with traffic management.
CLT also is evaluating long-term solutions to mitigate traffic congestion.
If traveling, here are things you can do to have a smooth journey:

|
Get Here Early
Arrive at least two hours before departure time for a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight – that means being physically inside the Airport. Remember airlines begin boarding 30 to 45 minutes before scheduled departures.
Check security wait times on CLT’s website and the CLT Airport app. You can also keep tabs on shuttle bus wait times.
And remember, always check with your airline for information about delays or cancelations.

Plan Ahead
Be sure to book your parking in advance online at parkCLT.com or on the official CLT Airport app to guarantee your preferred parking option. The traffic on the roadways and highways could be congested, so knowing where you are going ahead of time can help make the day less hectic.
If you haven’t reserved parking in advance, you can view a real-time parking map for drive-up availability.
Or, place a food or coffee order in advance at select restaurants instead of waiting in line.
Unsure what you can bring through security? Send a question to @AskTSA on X (formerly known as Twitter), or check the What Can I Bring? feature on TSA.gov.

Picking up Passengers
Plan on arriving 20 to 30 minutes after the flight has landed to allow passengers time to disembark and retrieve luggage in Baggage Claim.
If you get to the Airport early, pass the time in the free Cell Phone Lot located off Josh Birmingham Parkway.
Or, park in the Hourly Deck (the first 15 minutes are free), then take the elevators to the lowest level (Level 1) and use the underground walkway to the terminal. Once there, use the elevator or escalator to Baggage Claim or Ticketing.

Dropping off Passengers
You can drop off passengers curbside on the upper level of the terminal lobby (Departures/Ticketing). If the departures area is congested, drop them off on the lower level (Arrivals/Baggage Claim), and once inside take an escalator or elevator up to the Ticketing area.
To escort passengers inside, park in the Hourly Deck (the first 15 minutes are free), take the elevators to the lowest level (Level 1) and use the underground walkway to the terminal. Once there, use the elevator or escalator to Baggage Claim or Ticketing.
To return to your vehicle from Baggage Claim or Ticketing, take the elevator to the lower level (Level 1) and follow the underground walkway back to the Hourly Deck, then take the elevator to the floor where you are parked.
