Progress Update
Our team is making steady headway on the Walton Street Park project, and we are happy to share that we have a clear timeline taking shape for the upcoming year:
- Currently: The design team continues to actively work through the detailed construction documents.
- January 2027: The project is scheduled to enter the permitting process.
- January – April 2027: Once permitting is complete, we will formally advertise the project for construction. Before breaking ground, City Council is required to approve the construction contract.
- Summer 2027: Construction is expected to begin. Once a contractor has been selected, the project team will hold a pre-construction meeting with the community to discuss the timeline and construction impacts.
*This timeline is an educated estimate, not a promise. Construction projects often involve unanticipated setbacks. We will keep the community updated with any timeline adjustments.
Contracting in Local Government
North Carolina public procurement law requires the City of Asheville to choose the lowest responsive, responsible bidder for construction projects. This rule exists to protect taxpayers, prevent government corruption, and guarantee fair competition. It is the City's policy to provide equal opportunity to potential qualified bidders, and one way of achieving this is through outreach. When the construction bid is posted, we will share the opportunity with the community and invite neighbors to share. We can also share information about any subcontracting opportunities when available.
Future Opportunities for Public Art and Expression at Walton Street Park
The design for the revitalized Walton Street Park features several spaces created specifically for public art. While the current park project focuses on building the foundational features, the art itself will be designed through a separate, dedicated community effort. The City is actively seeking funding so we can partner directly with the neighbors to bring these elements to life.
Quick Recap
In our last update, we shared that the design team refined the park concept following two review rounds with the Historic Resources Commission (HRC). Built on community feedback from 2024–2025 outreach, the plan focuses on honoring the park's legacy while delivering a modern space for everyone to enjoy. While market conditions and material sourcing remain dynamic, the City of Asheville remains fully committed to delivering a final park that reflects our shared community vision.
Thank you for your continued patience. We will keep you updated as we hit our next major milestone.
