If you have visited our website recently, you may have noticed a whole new look. Many City of San Antonio departments have migrated over to SA.gov, with SA.Gov/Arts the latest in these website changes. The goal of this new site is to make it easier for you to find information, data, and services. The site is now responsive and will adjust to your device of choice, including your phone. If you have any feedback, please make sure to take the survey found on the bottom of most pages, as we are always working to improve your experience.

With the start of a new school year for many San Antonio students, it is also time for the city to wind down fiscal year 2024. With your partnership and support, together we have accomplished so much for the arts and culture scene of San Antonio. We will soon be sharing highlights of those accomplishments in our annual report.

As a welcome Saturday evening breeze blew outside the Spirit Waters Gallery about a mile east of downtown, San Antonio author Xelena González held up an extra artistic version of the lotería card El Árbol, the tree.

Eyes like smiles, the award-winning writer waved the card to a crowd of around 100 people, many seated at tables to play that classic game also known as Mexican bingo. Only this lotería card seemed to mirror itself in design, its round root system below shaped just like its verdant crown above...

Events

Alonso S. Perales: Civil Rights Trailblazer Traveling Exhibit –
On view through October 19 at the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute Visitor Center. A traveling exhibit on the life and legacy of Alonso S. Perales (1898-1960), civil rights activist, public intellectual, and US diplomat. Drawing from Dr. Cynthia E. Orozco's recently published biography of Perales, his first comprehensive biography, this exhibit will introduce Perales to a new generation.

Xicanx Month (August) –
Xicanx Month seeks to honor and build upon this legacy through a series of collaborative events, exhibitions, and performances throughout the month of August.

Luminaria Xica-Next Art Pop Up Exhibition –
On view through August 30 at St Paul Square. Featuring Xicanx artists who have produced commissioned work for Luminaria including Ruth Leonela Buentello, Cruz Ortiz, Christian Möller, Adrian de la Cruz, Isabel Ann Castro, and Mauro de la Tierra. The gallery is available to view by appointment and during special events. Those interested in visiting the exhibit can RSVP online.

Jacalito: Exhibit & Platica by Beto DeLeón –
August 16 from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. at Galeria E.V.A. "JACALITO" is a visual journey through family stories, South Texas history, and personal exploration of the symbolism that goes into crafting our homes and sacred spaces. This show is a personal offering shaped by research, prayers and foodways that have been woven around South Texas ecology and connection.

Wonder Theatre PRESENTS: THE WIZ –
Performances from August 16 – September 8 at Wonder Theatre at Wonderland of the Americas. A beloved Broadway gem, The Wiz infuses L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” with a dazzling mix of rock, gospel, and soul music. This timeless tale of Dorothy’s adventures through the Land of Oz is a joyous explosion of music, dance, magic, and heart to delight audience members of all ages.

Santa Rosa Ave.) for the opening reception for Centro de Artes' newest exhibition: “Dining with Rolando Briseño: A 50-Year Retrospective” featuring iconic works by beloved San Antonio artist Rolando Briseño.

Teatro Salon Table Reading Series Open Call –
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Theater Arts Program is hosting an open call for submission of unproduced scripts for the Teatro Salon Table Reading Series. Deadline to submit is August 30.

Artpace Texas Open Call –
The Texas Open Call is Artpace’s primary resource for identifying artists who are interested in, and eligible for participation in Artpace’s International Artist-in-Residence program as well as studio visits by curators participating in Artpace’s Curatorial Residency program. This opportunity is available only to artists currently living and working in Texas. Deadline to apply is September 30.

Alamo City Arts Open Call for Dancers –
Alamo City Arts invites dancers of all ages to audition for their traditional production of "The Nutcracker" on August 17 and August 24 at the Alamo City Arts Academy.

Job Opening: City of San Antonio Creative Services Manager –
The City of San Antonio is looking to hire a Creative Services Manager, responsible for managing the development and implementation of creative marketing initiatives in support of citywide communication strategies. Application deadline is August 18 (11:59 PM CDT).

Call for Nominations: Texas State Artist –
The Texas State Legislature designates Texas State Artists during each Legislative Session. These positions, including state poet laureate, state musician classical, state musician, state two-dimensional artist and state three-dimensional artist, are one-year appointments. Nominations are now open for the 2025 and 2026 positions through Oct. 15, 2024.

UTSA Arts Fall Registration –
Registration for Fall Community Art Classes is now open. These classes are great if you're a lifelong learner, a passionate hobbyist, and educator or a parent looking for engaging activities.

Texas Library and Archives Foundation’s Martha Wong Scholarship –
Through this new award, we encourage Texans to pursue a degree from a Texas library/information science graduate program or school librarian certification program. Application deadline is August 24.

The Dorothy Antoinette LaSelle Travel Fellowship –
Two awards of $5,000 will be provided to artists working and residing in the state of Texas, enabling the recipients to complete a research trip to further their artistic practice. Deadline to apply is August 31.

CreArte Latino Arts & Humanities Conference –
The CreArte Expo is holding an open call for proposals from artists, educators, academics, and independent scholars examining various forms of Latino artistic expression, including but not limited to film, literature, music, visual arts, and dance. Deadline to submit is August 25.

Texas Music Incubator Rebate Program –
To be eligible for this annual rebate, a music venue or music festival promoter must submit an application with supporting documentation to show that it meets requirements. The first round of applications is open September 1 through November 30, 2024. Future rounds of applications will be announced pending available funds.

The Texas Music Office "Liscense Plate Grant" –
Also known as the Music Educational and Community Grant Program Project, which provides grants to benefit music-related educational and community programs sponsored by 501(c)(3) nonprofits based in Texas. Only 501(c)(3) nonprofits based in Texas may apply. Application deadline is August 31.

Call for Artists: Centro Cultural Aztlan –
Centro Cultural Aztlan is looking for artists for their Fall Exhibits and Markets: "Dia de los Muertos," "Zonarte - El Mercado Aztlan," and the annual "Celebración a la Virgen de Guadalupe!" Deadline is September 16.
