Caltrans, in partnership with the Bay Area Air District and the City of Oakland, is conducting the I-580 Truck Access Study to understand how removing the truck ban on I-580 could affect travel patterns, traffic conditions, air quality, and noise along the I-880 and I-580 corridors and other nearby state highways and major arterials. For over 70 years, trucks have been banned on I-580 between San Leandro and Oakland, concentrating heavy truck traffic on I-880 and I-238 and creating lasting health and environmental burdens for communities along those corridors.

Over the past few months, Caltrans has been leading outreach throughout the study area to hear directly from community members by hosting a public webinar, meeting with individual community groups, and hosting an online engagement portal.

The traffic, noise, air quality analyses and racial equity assessment results are now available, and Caltrans wants your input! Visit the Caltrans I-580 Truck Access Study engagement portal to learn more and get involved:
