Affordable Housing Summit Recap

Hendersonville's first Affordable Housing Summit held last week was an incredible kick-off to the City's Strategic Housing Plan Development process. We are energized by the community’s participation and inspired by this fantastic opportunity to learn about where we are as a community, and what opportunities exist to improve the quality of life for all residents.

If you were unable to join us, we encourage you to watch the video!

Christopher Todd, Sarah Odio, Shane Phillips, Sarah Grymes and Lew Holloway made up the Affordable Housing Summit panel who answered questions submitted by the community.

We could not have pulled off this event without the support of the Hendersonville City Council and wonderful organizations operating the resource room!

Three breakout sessions with housing policy expert Shane Phillips took place on May 17th at the City Operations Center. Local government staff, non-profit stakeholders, City Council and Strategic Housing Plan Steering Committee members made up the groups. The breakout sessions allowed for a deeper and more technical dive into policies and strategies.

Committee meeting in a city hall meeting room

The City's Strategic Housing Plan Steering Committee participated in one of Friday's breakout sessions with Shane Phillips as well as holding their regular committee meeting on May 20th. The committee went through a debrief and provided feedback on the summit as well as started developing their work plan.

We encourage members of the community to attend the monthly committee meetings held on the third Monday of each month at 4:00 PM. To encourage additional community participation, we'll be holding future meetings at the City Operation Center and offering a digital viewing option via Zoom. Visit the city's website to view meeting details.

There is no single answer or fix for the complex opportunities surrounding affordable housing. We hope the community will join us for upcoming meetings and learn alongside us as the strategic housing plan is developed.
