Chief’s Monthly Summary
Civil disagreement. It is one of the greatest aspects of being an American. In fact, it is what makes us the strongest nation in the world. We can disagree and still be friends. Agree?
Respecting one’s opinion and trying to understand one’s perspective can be challenging. There should be no expectation that one must be swayed by another’s position on a matter. Especially when the topic is a fundamental one. We owe each other grace when disagreeing. It is a two-way street. It might even be a multi-lane highway.
Why this topic this month? I see people becoming more aligned with other people who they admittedly would never align with over issues in this country. Issues bringing opposites together. Solidarity!
One thing I can say about this community is that people are willing to talk and listen. Rather than jumping to conclusions and acting out, this community allows for dialogue. I appreciate that. It is the only way we move forward with any meaningful progress.
Our elected leaders are at the forefront leading the conversation. The women who make up our council hold their own opinions of course. But, they listen, they use discernment to process information and always act in the best interest of the city. They can disagree with one another, disagree with the public at times, and still work together for a solution. Being at the closest layer of government to the people is incredibly tough. Hats off to them.
Our long-time Mayor, Barbara Volk, does not often say much, but when she does, we listen. She commands a room, speaks with authority without being authoritative, and above all, she listens to the community. We are fortunate that she picked Hendersonville to dedicate nearly forty years of public service. Congratulations on an exceptional career in public service. Enjoy retirement, Mayor!
Lastly, thank you for listening to what we report every month. Staff take considerable time helping pull this report together. This report has evolved over the last five years. We try hard to report information that you might never know about what goes on inside these four walls; good and bad. We use this report to build trust within our community. Because, agree or disagree, we will always be open and honest with you. I want you to always know that we strive to serve with excellence, and we put the safety of this community above all else.
