Reed Creek Greenway Northern Extension Project enters Design Phase
The City of Asheville is pleased to announce that the Reed Creek Greenway Northern Extension project, a key project funded by the 2024 General Obligation Bond, is officially moving into the design phase. With City Council approval of a contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. at their August 26 meeting, this significant milestone marks the next step in the development of an important piece of Asheville’s greenway network.
An existing portion of the Reed Creek Greenway spans about 0.86 miles from the intersection of Broadway Street and W.T. Weaver Boulevard to Elizabeth Street. The project will extend the existing greenway from its current terminus at W.T. Weaver Boulevard and Broadway Street, heading north toward Riverside Drive and ending at the I-26 ramp. This addition will create a vital connection, enhancing pedestrian and bicycle access between North Asheville, the UNC Asheville campus, and the city's downtown core.
The Reed Creek Greenway was identified as a high priority in the City of Asheville Greenway, ADA, and Pedestrian (GAP) Plan. In 2024, the City completed a grant-funded feasibility study, which will inform the project design.
The design phase is anticipated to take approximately one year to complete. Following the finalization of design plans, construction is estimated to begin in early 2027.
This project is a testament to the City of Asheville's ongoing commitment to expanding its greenway and trail system, improving transportation options, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
The City will continue to provide updates on the Reed Creek Greenway Northern Extension as the project progresses, including opportunities for public feedback later this year. Stay informed by subscribing for updates on the project page.
