The City of Menlo Park will host a Photos with Santa community event at Arrillaga Family Recreation Center on Saturday, Dec. 16. Tickets are $5 per person. Bring your camera and join us with friends and family for a morning full of holiday cheer, including a continental breakfast, holiday crafts and a photo with Santa. Advance registration is required – visit the event page to register.

 

Activity guide winter enrollment now open for residents

Learning is an adventure that yields lifelong benefits, and learning by doing is perhaps the best adventure of all. This season, learn something new, or sharpen your skills by signing up for a class. The City of Menlo Park hosts a wide range of high-quality classes for all ages at reasonable rates. Fitness, dance, sports, gymnastics, music, drama, arts and crafts, lifelong learning and more. Winter enrollment opened on Tuesday, Dec. 5 for Menlo Park residents, and will open Tuesday, Dec. 12 for non-residents. Check out the activity guide to find and enroll in classes.

 

Teach a recreation class – seeking qualified instructors

The City of Menlo Park seeks qualified and experienced local instructors to teach recreation classes in City facilities on a seasonal basis. Instructors are qualified independent contractors who in some cases may receive compensation for their services through a contract with the City. Interested and qualified local instructors are encouraged to submit a contract instructor interest form describing their qualifications and experience and providing a description of the proposed class for consideration.

 

Tip of the week: Books by Mail for homebound residents

The City of Menlo Park focuses on inclusion, belonging, access, fairness and justice for the entire Menlo Park community and all of the people who are part of it. First created during the pandemic, the Books by Mail program now delivers library materials to qualified residents of incorporated Menlo Park who are homebound or otherwise unable to physically come to the library and/or carry home checked-out library materials due to advanced age, disability, long-term illness or other impairments. Learn more or apply to be part of Books by Mail on our website or call the library at 650-330-2520.

 

Visit a California State Park by getting free passes at your library

Did you know Library cardholders can check out a California State Parks Pass? The pass provides free vehicle day-use entry for one passenger vehicle. Plan your next winter hike or take your family to the beach. Visit any of the 13 participating State Parks in San Mateo County! Author Ajuan Mance: What Do Brothas Do All Day?

Meet Bay Area artist/author Dr. Ajuan Mance, returning to the library to share her latest picture book, inspired by a Richard Scarry classic! Ajuan’s joyous portraits of Black men engaged in everyday life celebrate the deep roots and rich cultures of African American communities. Ajuan will read from her new book and share an activity, Monday, Dec. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma St.

 

Garden Talk: Rain Gardens

Our monthly Garden Talk is being held on a special date—and with a guest presenter! Rain gardens can play a critical role in urban stream restoration and they can enhance the beauty of your yard. Our guest presenter from BAWSCA will give you tips on getting started, no matter the size of the space you have available. Join us Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom.

 

Global Language Storytime: Vietnamese

Our Global Language Storytime features a different language and culture each month, and this time, young ones and their adults are invited to a Vietnamese storytime! Join the fun and learning Thursday, Dec. 14 at 11:15 a.m. at Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma St.

 

Music with Afroholix

Join us for a concert at the library! Afroholix combines many different genres of Black music promising a blend of funk, soul and “jazz improv from deep outer space.” This unique event full of soulful improvisation happens Saturday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at Belle Haven Library, 413 Ivy Dr.
