Hello D6,

There’s great news for neighborhoods and families this week.

I have mentioned in past newsletters about a Department of Public Works plan to add stop signs and speed bumps across the city.

That plan was brought before the City Council and was approved unanimously this week.

If you recall, the proposal was to add 100 flashing stop signs and 100 radar feedback signs.

The approved plan will also change the criteria for the installation of speed humps;

stop signs;

traffic signals;

And radar feedback signs.

Here's a list of the Radar Feedback Signs that will be installed in District 6:

An area of concern for me, as well as for the business owners along the Old Highway 90 corridor, is the ongoing construction that has affected business in our district.

The top issue has been a lack of communication regarding project time frames and projected completion dates. Part of the Public Works Department’s presentation this week was their plan to address this problem.

I was happy to see plans for an all-inclusive Public Works online dashboard that will include up-to-date information on current projects across the city. Citizens and business owners will be able to access the dashboard for updates.

I will keep you informed on the dashboard’s progress.

My favorite moments this week was a joyful and festive A Session with the beautiful voices of Gan Gani pre-schoolers:

the colorful dancers from Danza Nueva Vida;

and a well-deserved Official Congratulations to the dedicated Express-News photographers Billy Calzada, Kin Man Hui, Jerry Lara, and Luis Rios, who recently retired, and came to the Council meeting to share some of the many poignant photographs they've made over their careers.

We thanked them for the wonderful storytelling and and years of service to our community.

It was my honor to participate in this week’s Texas Latina Empowerment Day, presented by HOPE - Hispanas Organized for Political Equality.

The organization is dedicated to train, educate, encourage, and empower Latinas to make a difference in their communities.

As a HOPE Binational Fellow it was inspiring to be a part of this gathering of our many Latina leaders!

An honor and privilege for me this week was to be chosen as a member of the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame.

I share the honor with a list of outstanding, strong, formidable women leaders in San Antonio who are working every day to make our city better.

I’m grateful to show this honor with such wonderful women!

I was equally inspired to celebrate the honorees for the 2023 Best 25 Nurses of South-Central Texas!

I’m grateful for the work of the San Antonio chapters of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, Oncology Nursing Society, and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses for recognizing the work of our dedicated medical professionals in this region.

As we get closer to the holidays there’s much to celebrate!

It was a joy to see so many friends and neighbors at County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez’s holiday dance.

The commissioner and his staff put on a great party!

The holiday season is also the time for the San Antonio Food Bank’s Convoy of Hope.

Every year truckloads of holiday meals are taken to the City’s Senior Centers across the city.

As mayor Pro-tem, it was my honor and duty to kick off this year’s convoy from the steps of City Hall.

This was the 20th anniversary of the Convoy of Hope which plays a vital role in the Food Bank’s Project HOPE (Healthy Options Program for the Elderly) that ensures that the nutritional needs of our city’s most vulnerable older adults are met.

I was happy to see a truckload of holiday joy on its way to the Lopez Senior Center in District 6!

Have a great week!

Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda

The Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114 requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event.

This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not.

We ask that you discuss this new state law with your child(ren).

Always dispose of pesticides properly

Pesticides and herbicides can be a convenient way to protect plants from pests and weeds. But when used or discarded incorrectly, these chemicals pose great risks not only to our ecosystem and wildlife, but also to our water, soil, air and human health.

The best way to avoid the perils of pesticides and herbicides is to stop using them altogether. But if you must use them:

  • Always carefully read the product label and follow the disposal instructions exactly.
  • Only purchase what you need and use it until it’s gone to avoid leftovers.
  • Never discard these items in your trash bin for regular collection.
  • Don’t ever pour them down sink drains, toilets or storm drains.

Pesticides and herbicides must be disposed properly at a household hazardous waste site. For a schedule of monthly drop-off events, visit sa.gov/swmd.

Animal Care Services joins Daisy Cares to feed hungry pets in San Antonio

Pet food donations sought as holidays near and needs increase

The San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) team is joining Daisy Cares, a local non-profit, to host a holiday pet food drive that will help both organizations support pet parents in need by filling their pet pantries.

Bags of dog and puppy food are especially needed in addition to other new or gently used pet items. All donations will be divided between the Daisy Cares pet food pantry and the SAACS Community Animal Support and Assistance (CASA) program, which uses a case management approach to assist pet parents in need with food, humane care support, and veterinary resources.

Residents can bring pet food donations through the end of November to Animal Care Services during regular business hours. SAACS is located at 4710 State Highway 151 and is open on weekdays from 1 - 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends (except on City holidays). All donations are tax-deductible.
