Displacement in Austin | StoryMap

leals tire shop

As housing costs rise, fewer affordable housing options are available. This makes it harder for people to stay in their neighborhoods, and as a result, they may end up moving farther from the city limits. This is displacement, an increasingly familiar phenomenon that households across the country are experiencing; here’s a glimpse into the experience in Austin.

The Austin market has been successful in creating more housing units, helping lower rents across the city. However, households at the lowest income levels have not benefited from lower rents. About half of Austin renters remain housing-cost burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing expenses.

The Austin Strategic Housing Blueprint includes a Displacement Mitigation Strategy that identifies 15 priorities to address displacement in Austin. We developed a Displacement StoryMap that brings together data and stories of vulnerable households to show how housing costs, demographics, and jobs are reshaping where people can live in the city. The StoryMap is a tool that summarizes complex housing and historical data and displacement analysis to inform where the greatest areas of vulnerability exist and direct specific strategies to those spaces.

6909 Ryan Drive

The 6909 Ryan Drive development continues to reach important milestones. Informed by previous and ongoing engagement with the Crestview neighborhood, and its location adjacent to Crestview Station, this project will be developed as a public-private partnership between Austin Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) and DMA Development Company, LLC (DMA). This partnership will also bring together a Community Advisory Board to provide meaningful input on the design of the park and transit plaza. Stay in touch with community updates on the Ryan Drive development site and subscribe to the Ryan Drive newsletter.

The Ivory Opens as Austin's First Carless Condominium Community

We celebrated the opening of The Ivory, Austin’s first carless condominium community, located at 1309 Chicon Street in District 1. In partnership with the Chestnut Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation (CNRC), a non-profit affordable housing organization, the development features 53 residential units and three commercial spaces, with 40 homes reserved for households earning at or below 70% of the median family income (MFI) and 13 offered at market rate.

The Ivory Street View

The Ivory aims to redefine affordability by reducing both housing and transportation costs. Each home features energy-efficient design elements, including electric appliances, quartz countertops, in-unit washer and dryer hookups, and private or Juliet balconies. The Ivory is designed in line with the City’s Climate Protection Plan and operates entirely on electricity, without gas service. It features on-site solar energy that covers nearly 90% of residents’ electrical needs, saving homeowners about $100 per month on utility bills.

In partnership with CapMetro and Quantum Mobility, residents will also have access to an on-site bus stop, a bike-share station, and two electric car-share vehicles, providing affordable and accessible transportation. Homebuyers will receive mobility credits and transit passes to support car-light or car-free living. Naming Contest Still Open!

We’re building more than just housing—we’re building a place to call home. And we want your voice to help shape its identity! We're inviting residents, neighbors, and community partners to submit name ideas for our new affordable housing community located at the intersection of Doris Drive and Hathaway Drive across the street from Burnet Middle School.

A panel will review submissions based on:

  • Mission alignment – Does it reflect our purpose and values?
  • Community relevance – Does it resonate with the people and place?
  • Tone and perception – Is it welcoming, empowering, and positive?
  • Memorability – Is it easy to say, spell, and remember?

Take the survey to name the future neighborhood of the Austin Community Land Trust.
