What’s next for the “Housing Choices” Text Amendment?
Council expects to hold a Public Hearing on May 24, 2023, to discuss changes to the Town’s land use management rules (or LUMO). The changes would allow more diverse types of housing to be built in some areas. These changes are a part of the proposed “Housing Choices for a Complete Community” or “Housing Choices” Text Amendment. The first chance that Council could vote on this topic is in June.
What is a Public Hearing?
A Public Hearing is a Council meeting where community members can provide feedback on a topic. Council also discusses the topic. Council can hold more meetings on a topic if they need more input.
What is in the revised proposal?
On April 10, Chapel Hill Town Council held a work session to discuss the proposed “Housing Choices” text amendment. Staff revised the January 2023 proposal based on community input and more analysis. Watch the video here.
The revised proposal is different in two key areas, identified in italics:
- Triplexes, fourplexes, and cottage courts (a new type of housing in Chapel Hill) would be allowed only in areas that already allow multi-family development
- Allow accessory apartments as a secondary use for cultural and institutional facilities as well as places of worship
How can I provide input?
We welcome and encourage your input. There are three ways that you can provide input for this proposal:
- Attend in-person at the Town Council Meeting and share your comments.
- Email the Mayor and Council at mayorandcouncil@townofchapelhill.org
- Answer our online survey
