Dead tree removal and pruning work to take place on Lexington Avenue this month
City Arborist Mark Foster has identified three dead trees on the northwest side of Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville that must be removed. These trees have reached the end of their life cycle and no longer provide the stability needed to safely remain in place. Left standing, dead trees can quickly become hazardous as they are more likely to shed large branches or topple, especially during storms or periods of high winds.
In addition to removing the three dead trees, Public Works staff will also be pruning dead or weakened limbs from other trees along Lexington Avenue. Pruning helps maintain the health of the trees that remain, reduces the risk of falling branches, and extends the overall life of the tree canopy in the area.
This work is necessary to ensure public safety for residents, visitors, and businesses downtown. The removal and pruning activities will take place in the upcoming weeks.
Replacement trees will be planted as part of the upcoming Lexington Sidewalk Restoration project. There will be a further assessment of remaining existing trees in the project area during the design phase this fall.
We appreciate your understanding as we take steps to keep our public spaces safe.
