Lexington Avenue Sidewalk Project moves into design phase

The City of Asheville is pleased to announce that the Lexington Avenue Sidewalk Restoration project, a key project funded by the 2024 general obligation bond, is officially moving into the design phase. With City Council approval of a contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. at their October 14 meeting, this milestone marks the next step in the restoration of an important section of sidewalk in downtown Asheville.

The design phase is anticipated to take approximately 8 months to complete with construction kicking off in mid-2026. The design team will be in the project area in the coming weeks to gather site information and conduct survey work.

The project team is committed to consulting the community and impacted stakeholders in early aspects of the process, and – for property-front impacts particularly – throughout the project duration. Later in the process, the public will be involved mainly for updates related to the construction schedule. Stay tuned for more information. A public meeting will be held in early 2026.

Project Overview:
This project entails a full restoration of the sidewalk on both sides of North Lexington Avenue between Woodfin Street/Hiawassee Street and Walnut Street.
