District 2 Councilman Files Council Consideration Request to Address Maintenance of Union Pacific Property in San Antonio
February 19, 2024
District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has filed a Council Consideration Request (CCR) to formalize a partnership with Union Pacific to address possible maintenance issues related to their properties.
“District 2 contains the highest number of rail miles and intersections with Union Pacific in San Antonio. Based on numerous calls from residents asking for the city to maintain these areas, I found it necessary to call for action to address these overgrown properties on a long-term basis. I look forward to reaching a solution that achieves a level of safety and beautification for all of San Antonio,” said the Councilman.
The CCR was filed on February 16, 2024, with supporting signatures from Councilmembers Teri Castillo (District 5), Melissa Cabello Havrda (District 6), Marina Alderete Gavito (District 7), and Marc White (District 10). The next step in the process is scheduling this on an upcoming Governance Committee meeting agenda.
District 2 Councilman files request for Pet Deposit Assistance Program to increase pet adoptions by renters
February 19, 2024
Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez filed a Council Consideration Request (CCR) to develop an income-based pet deposit assistance program for renters to address stray and roaming animals in San Antonio. This proposed City program would pay, in full or part, pet deposits for those individuals who choose to foster or adopt pets from the City’s Animal Care Services shelter, or partner shelters. In consultation with the San Antonio Apartment Association, this policy proposal seeks to remove barriers to pet fostering and pet adoptions, freeing up much-needed space in the municipal animal shelter.
“The high numbers of stray and roaming pets in San Antonio pose a serious threat to the safety and wellbeing of both residents and animals. I will continue to work with our Animal Care Services department to find innovative ways to address this issue, and am pleased to partner with the San Antonio Apartment Association to find safe, long-term homes for our city’s pets. “ said the Councilman.
“The San Antonio Apartment Association is pleased to work alongside District 2 City Council Representative, Jalen McKee-Rodriguez in his tireless efforts to help make it more accessible to have pets in rental housing,” said Allison Cohen, Government Relations Manager, San Antonio Apartment Association.
The CCR was filed on February 16, 2024, with supporting signatures from Councilmembers Sukh Kaur (District 1), Adriana Rocha-Garcia (District 4), Teri Castillo (District 5), and Melissa Cabello-Havrda (District 6). The next step in the process is scheduling the item on an upcoming Governance Committee agenda.
District 2 Councilman Celebrates the Creation of the Office of Integrated Community Safety
February 21, 2024
Today, as a result of a Council Consideration Request filed by Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez and ongoing efforts by the City to facilitate a comprehensive and coordinated approach to public safety, City Manager Erik Walsh announced the Office of Integrated Community Safety. The District 2 Councilman issued the following statement in celebration of its creation:
“The step of establishing this office signals that the City is committed to enhancing community safety by engaging in it holistically and leading the charge to address social conditions that contribute to crime.
“We know that crime is a symptom of societal ailments such as poverty, limited access to housing, transportation, and economic opportunity, as well as decades of underinvestment in our most vulnerable communities. We anticipate positive results this office will achieve as it works collaboratively alongside our City departments on the Violence Prevention Strategic Plan, the Violent Crime Reduction Plan, the Good Neighbor Program, the Neighborhood Safety Program Assessment, and other Public Safety Data Analysis.
“Since elected in 2021, I have implored the City to engage permanently with criminologists who can provide ongoing feedback and support for the services, programs, and initiatives our residents rely on most. We welcome Maria Vargas and are eager to work with and learn from her.”
