Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center Phase 2 Improvements Project Update

 

Please see the information below for the latest updates on progress, photos, and announcements:

  • Exterior circulation corridors for the second floor are being waterproofed.
  • Foundation footings for the Zocalo are being coordinated with stormwater pipe locations and tree roots to avoid conflicts.
  • Electrical transformers have been delivered to the building for installation.
  • Welding inspections were completed prior to continuing erection of the shade structure.
  • An opening was carefully cut in the existing precast concrete panels to connect the old and the new building addition.
  • Roofing has begun with installation of the metal decking and with parapet blocking for the roof edge secured in place.
  • A brick mock-up reflecting architectural coursing detail has been prepared for the team to review. 
  • Paint mock-up of a steel column was prepared illustrating the finish option for the team to review.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • City Council has approved artists Katherine Telley and Ruben Esquivel to design and fabricate artwork for the EST MACC Phase 2, Art in Public Places (AIPP) Project. A kick-off meeting has been scheduled for later this month. More announcements regarding the planned community engagement for this project can be found at the AIPP website here.
  • Concrete pours and steel deliveries will continue. Work hours will adhere to the City’s noise ordinance. Ordinance information can be found here.
  • The Confluence, a separate public/private partnership project, has delivered the lattice bridge on-site this month. The parking lot remains as the construction access point. Temporary trail detours and additional project information can be found here.

SCHEDULED MILESTONES

  • Construction began – August 28, 2023
  • Anticipated completion of all major construction activity – Summer 2025
  • Anticipated grand opening – Fall 2025

 

Please note that as with any construction project, schedules are projected as accurately as possible, and all dates are subject to change due to the nature of construction and weather.
