Hello D6,
The headline this week was the SA Ready to Work scorecard.
|
|
|
|
The San Antonio Ready to Work workforce development program was launched in 2022.
It’s no secret that the program got off to a slow start, but neither is it lost that recruitment, enrollment, and training can take time.
We’re at the two year mark and performance measures are important.
During this week’s Ready to Work City Council briefing I had some basic questions. How many people are enrolled in training, how many have successfully completed training, and how many have found jobs.
I was encouraged by the number of people with disabilities that have applied and have been interviewed for participation in the program, as well as the 267 or so foster kids who have completed the program.
I'm thankful that we're including those populations because they're very often left behind.
I’m encouraged as well that the labor union seat on the board has been filled. I expect to see an increase in trades apprenticeships.
Also, I was happy to see a dedicated pathway for teacher apprenticeships.
Conversations have started with local school districts, Region 20, and UTSA to launch an apprenticeship program to fill some the vacancies that our school districts Are experiencing. The more we can do to upskill education paraprofessionals and permanent substitutes is money and energy well spent.
We lost so many teachers who left the classroom to the effects of the pandemic. Teaching is always difficult, so thankful that Ready to Work is emphasizing that profession.

There were three items brought to Council on Thursday that I want to bring to your attention.
One is the approval of funds for an older adult nutrition program. This is a two-year, $2 Million grant that will play a pivotal role in addressing the unique dietary needs of older adults.
Our seniors face challenges such as limited incomes, mobility issues, and health conditions that can affect their ability to access and afford nutritious food.
The goal is for our seniors to maintain their health, independence, and overall well-being.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Two, is $410,000 from the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council for Trauma, that will be used by the San Antonio Police Department Mental Health Unit Program for Intensive Care Coordination.
The funds will be used to pay overtime for two SAPD Mental Health Officer positions for forty-eight hours a week throughout 2024.
We talk a lot on the Council about increasing SA CORE. This funding will increase staff hours and will make SA Core stronger.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
And three is an increase to the Rescue Partner Incentive Program contract with SNIPSA, from $50,000 to $90,000. The goal is to increase he number of Animal Care Services rescues from 250 to 450 animals.
This is the kind of community partnership we should fund. SNIPSA is one organization in a very big, very active pet foster community in our city. This funding will reduce the stray population and support the foster community’s commitment.
We need to have more funds dedicated to partnerships like this.

This week I visited a corporate campus in D6 that is ready for occupancy.
The Reserve is a 270,000 square foot facility. It’s the perfect site for a corporation wanting to expand in San Antonio.
Thanks to the ownership group for investing in our city and providing a campus that can accommodate up to 1,500 employees. It’s beautiful and ready for occupancy!

May is Older Americans Month, and you know how much I love our seniors!
I was honored to help present proclamations recognizing Older Americans Month, Elder Abuse Prevention Month, and Senior Citizens’ Caregivers Month.
This is special for me because I recently introduced a city ordinance proposal, also called a CCR, that addresses elder abuse reporting.
I’ve been working with Probate Judge Veronica Vasquez to help SAPD officers, firefighters, and all city employees who work with our seniors to have the knowledge and tools to identify and report elder abuse.
Elder abuse is hard to identify and few people know where to report it. The ordinance proposal will soon go before the Public Safety Committee, which I Chair, and after that it will go to the full Council for approval.
Our elders looked after us in their time, it’s now our time to protect them.
Throughout May we’ll recognize the contributions of older adults and the agencies who serve them.
Thank you for all you do!

ACS Pet Of The Week
From a bit of a rough start to finding my pawsome foster family, I'm ready for furever with my future best furiend! Could that be you?
Back in late December, I had a bit of a scare near a busy intersection. I was injured and needed help! Thankfully, Animal Care Officer Austin transported me to ACS for some TLC. Then, along came Ms. N and her awesome family. They took me in as a foster, and life hasn't been the same since! Sunbathing sessions? Check. Relaxing car rides? Oh, you know it! Doggy Daycare Dates? My fav!
I'm also quite the cuddler—I'll cozy up on any couch like a pro and prefer sleeping in the bed. And yes, I've been known to rock a cute outfit or two.
Living with my foster family has shown me the joy of companionship. I get along well with my foster brothers and enjoy the company of older kids who get my vibe. I may get a tad anxious when left alone, but who doesn't miss their favorite humans?
Now, I'm ready for my furever home! If you're on the lookout for a sweet and loyal companion, let's connect. Consider taking advantage of Cathy Bissell and BISSELL Pet Foundation’s #Emptytheshelters adoption event going on now through May 15th! Reach out to the ACS foster team at ACSfoster@sanantonio.gov if you'd like to meet me! I can't wait to meet my future family!

The Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114 requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event.
This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not.
We ask that you discuss this new state law with your child(ren).

Always dispose of pesticides properly
Pesticides and herbicides can be a convenient way to protect plants from pests and weeds. But when used or discarded incorrectly, these chemicals pose great risks not only to our ecosystem and wildlife, but also to our water, soil, air and human health.
The best way to avoid the perils of pesticides and herbicides is to stop using them altogether. But if you must use them:
- Always carefully read the product label and follow the disposal instructions exactly.
- Only purchase what you need and use it until it’s gone to avoid leftovers.
- Never discard these items in your trash bin for regular collection.
- Don’t ever pour them down sink drains, toilets or storm drains.
Pesticides and herbicides must be disposed properly at a household hazardous waste site. For a schedule of monthly drop-off events, visit sa.gov/swmd.

Animal Care Services joins Daisy Cares to feed hungry pets in San Antonio
Pet food donations sought as holidays near and needs increase
The San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) team is joining Daisy Cares, a local non-profit, to host a holiday pet food drive that will help both organizations support pet parents in need by filling their pet pantries.
Bags of dog and puppy food are especially needed in addition to other new or gently used pet items. All donations will be divided between the Daisy Cares pet food pantry and the SAACS Community Animal Support and Assistance (CASA) program, which uses a case management approach to assist pet parents in need with food, humane care support, and veterinary resources.
Residents can bring pet food donations through the end of November to Animal Care Services during regular business hours. SAACS is located at 4710 State Highway 151 and is open on weekdays from 1 - 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends (except on City holidays). All donations are tax-deductible.
