Roy G. Guerrero Park Channel Stabilization
February 2025 Construction Update

The new pedestrian bridge has been installed at the Roy G. Guerrero Park Channel Stabilization site, but it remains closed to the public while work continues on the rest of the project. The project is on track to reach substantial completion in spring 2025.
Crews have been working to restore the project site to workable conditions following this month's inclement weather. Once restored, activity on the final concrete drop structure as well as revegetation around the site will resume. The three concrete drop structures built in the channel will stabilize erosion by acting as steps that steadily guide water into the river. The new pedestrian bridge was installed atop the second drop structure, supported by a 44-foot-deep foundation.
Completed Tasks
- The new pedestrian bridge has been placed
- West Drop Structures 2 and 3 are complete
Ongoing Tasks
- Project site restoration following rain and freezing temperatures
- Revegetation around the project site
- West Drop Structure 1 is 40% complete

Background
Ongoing and severe erosion had been occurring along an artificial drainage channel, known as Country Club West, in Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park. The erosion rendered the original pedestrian bridge inoperable and threatened the ball fields, trail, and surrounding parkland. The channel was too unstable to support a new pedestrian bridge since areas near the Colorado River are especially vulnerable to erosion. Years of complex engineering analysis and design led to the current solution to the erosion threat in the park. This project is the Watershed Protection Department’s largest-ever erosion control project.
