Longhorn Dam Artist Reginald Adams Hosts Community Engagement Workshop Event
The City of Austin's Capital Delivery Services is excited to partner with Art in Public Places (AIPP) to bring in Texas artist, Reginald Adams, for a community engagement workshop event. The community engagement workshop will take place Wednesday, July 17, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at the Rudy Mendez Recreation Center located at 2407 Canterbury Street.
“I’m so excited to see this project move forward and break ground,” said Council Member José Velásquez. “This workshop is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our community to come together to leave their mark through art. I’m looking forward to seeing how their vision is brought to life.”
The workshop will introduce Reginald and his team, along with their objectives and expected outcomes of the future mosaic artwork to be located in the new underpass being constructed under South Pleasant Valley Road. Reginald and his team will gather ideas from the community through interactive activities such as brainstorming sessions, sketching, and storytelling. Additionally, surveys will be distributed to collect any further suggestions or input from attendees. AIPP will provide light refreshments.
“I’m incredibly excited to see this new wishbone bridge come to life for East Austin — and now the community can pitch in ideas for this mosaic under South Pleasant Valley. It’s going to be an amazing place that reminds us of why we love our city,” said Congressman Greg Casar (D-Texas). “This is going to be a place for all of East Austin — from people walking for exercise, to biking to work, to enjoying live music. I can’t wait to see what our community and Reginald come up with.”

Reginald Adams
This is the first of many community engagement activities that Reginald will lead while working with AIPP on the Longhorn Dam project from now until the estimated completion in 2026. Reginald currently has two other artworks publicly viewable in Austin - "Reflections", located at the African American Culture and Heritage Facility, and "Field of Dreams", located at Downs Field.
“I am the little boy who loved to draw and never grew up,” explained Reginald Adams. “My father asked me to show him an example of a successful artist when I told him I wanted to be one. I couldn't name any at the time, but now I can serve as that example for him and any other child who dreams of doing the same.”
RSVP is not required for entry, but is encouraged. Attendees may RSVP to the event here.
If you are unable to attend the event, but would like to fill out the community engagement survey, you may do so here.
