Safety and mobility improvements coming to St. Johns Avenue
The City of Austin continues to provide safety and mobility improvements for all road users along St. Johns Avenue. Improvements began in 2021 with intersection safety improvements at the North Lamar and St. John’s intersection. In 2020, following a comprehensive traffic engineering study, City Council approved a new ordinance lowering the posted speed limit on St. Johns Avenue from 35 mph to 30 mph. In 2025, the City will add new pedestrian crossings, upgrade bus stops and enhance existing bike lanes.

Planned improvements
- St. Johns Avenue resurfaced from I-35 to Berkman Drive
- Pedestrian crossing islands
- Upgrades to 7 existing bus stops, and construction of 3 new stops
- Bikeway safety improvements
- On-street parking added to the south side of St. Johns Avenue between Grand Canyon Drive and Cameron Road
- Trail connection to Highland Neighborhood Park
- Driveway reconstructions as needed for sidewalk and shared use path accessibility, with access maintained during construction
Timeline
Work is expected to begin in fall 2025. The street will remain open during construction. All work is dependent on weather or any other unexpected delays.
