Construction Begins on Johnston Boulevard Sidewalk
Construction will begin this month on the Johnston Boulevard sidewalk, a project that will implement about 1 mile of new sidewalk on a main thoroughfare in West Asheville. The Johnston Boulevard sidewalk is one of several transportation projects prioritized by City residents during public outreach for the 2016 bond referendum.
The project team will host a community meeting on Wednesday, February 18, 5:30 p.m. at Johnston Elementary School to provide an opportunity for nearby residents and others directly impacted by construction to ask questions and further understand the project. The meeting will be held in the library of the school.
The goal of this project is to improve mobility, safety, and continuity for pedestrians and provide connections to local schools and parks. Notable user bases in this area include Johnston Elementary School, users of Roger Farmer Park, and the neighborhood residential and commercial areas.
The project has an estimated 18-month duration. Here’s what to expect during construction:

Temporary lane closures will be necessary throughout construction. The contractor plans to avoid traffic disruptions during peak hours. The contractor will provide clear signage and detours to direct traffic safely around the construction zone.

There will be construction noise during working hours. The contractor will do their best to minimize disruptions and keep noise levels as low as possible.

Residents will see construction equipment such as excavators, pavers, and trucks in the area. Please exercise caution and keep a safe distance from these vehicles.
