Hello D6,
This week was all about Fiesta! And I have wonderful images of the people and the celebrations that make our annual festival of San Antonio joy unique.
|
|
|
|
Before we get to Fiesta, there are a couple of things I want to mention.
During Tuesday’s Governance Committee meeting we continued our discussion regarding the Migrant Resource Center (MRC). There had been a request for the City to draft a formal resolution calling on the Federal Government to continue its funding of the MRC. That funding has since been approved, but I took the opportunity to once again call for an MRC funding plan B.
I first brought up the need for a Plan B more than one month ago, because I know that political winds can change in Washington and I don’t want the City to be caught flat-footed, with no plan if the federal money source runs dry.
I want the center to remain open as long as possible. I’m not in favor of closing it while there are migrants coming to our city, and while there are federal funds to keep it open.
This week the City announced that it will close the migrant facility at the airport, because the number of migrants coming through San Antonio has declined by 77 percent. Closing the Airport facility is smart, it saves money. But we should remain nimble, because migration trends have been seasonal, and we should expect an uptick in the Fall.
I don’t agree that the MRC is a magnet that attracts migrants to our city.
Immigrants have been coming to San Antonio and our country since before it was a country. The MRC in San Antonio is not the reason people risk their lives to get to this country and calling it a magnet is a distraction.
So, I reiterated my call for a plan B regarding MRC funding. We should discuss a plan B with the highest level of importance.

Our city is growing and housing is vital. On Wednesday we broke ground on a housing development in District 6 that will provide families with the opportunity to thrive.
The Vista at Reed, just walking distance from where I live, will have affordable housing where families can build a future.
Congratulations to OCI Development, a locally women-owned development company, Atlantic Pacific Companies, Opportunity Home and PNC for working to make this possible.

|
|
|
And on Thursday I wore a hardhat to get a glimpse of San Antonio’s future. The NuGreen Materials electronic recycling center is under construction and will come online soon.
It will be the first of its kind one-stop facility in the world. Everything from computers to monitors and mobile devices will be taken apart, its plastics and metals separated, recovered, and recycled.
This is the kind of sustainable growth we need to meet our city’s future.
It’s an impressive operation that will employ close to 70 people and operate 24 hours a day. I’m looking forward to visiting when it comes online.

This has been a wonderful Fiesta Week in San Antonio!
I was overjoyed to spend time celebrating our city and our culture with so many people from District 6 and from across San Antonio.
Any Baby Can 20th Annual Walk for Autism
The D6 team came out to support the Any Baby Can official Fiesta® event - the 20th Annual Walk for Autism as we recognize April as National Autism Awareness Month.
It was great to join thousands of participants and community partners from San Antonio, Bexar County, and South Texas in support of the many programs with all proceeds staying local to fund critical, one-of-a kind programs at Any Baby Can of San Antonio.
River Parade
I had a wonderful time celebrating the 2024 Texas Cavaliers River Parade with my Council colleagues surrounded by our family, friends and fellow San Antonians!
Champagne and Diamonds Brunch
I was thrilled to celebrate the first Sunday of Fiesta San Antonio at the annual Champagne and Diamonds Brunch hosted by Lo Bello Women’s Association. They have raised over $2 million in scholarship money over the past 32 years for our city’s students. Providing scholarships opens doors for students that might not otherwise afford a higher education. Education is power!
The Lo Bello Association is true to their tagline - Our Events Change Lives!
Fiesta in the Hills
I had a great time at “Fiesta in the Hills” — Hallmark University’s Inaugural Fiesta Event. Having Hallmark University in D6, is truly an asset for our community and the City of San Antonio, offering undergraduate and graduate Nursing, Cyber/IT, Aeronautics, and Business degrees. Viva Fiesta!
Rey Feo
Kicked off the opening weekend of Fiesta 2024 celebrating the contributions of the The Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation. Nowhere else but San Antonio do we have rich traditions supporting education!
D6 Seniors Fiesta Dance
What better group to share Fiesta with than our fun loving seniors! We had a great turnout with entertainment by DJ Eric Perez and Ballet Folklorico Sol de San Antonio, a women-owned company by Alynna Martin.
We appreciate our partners and sponsors — the San Antonio Food Bank, Blue Cares, The Gonzaba Foundation, and Milo’s, a family owned company since 1946. Our D6 team had a great time creating the best Fiesta Dance for everyone to enjoy.

ACS Pet Of The Week
Hershee's story began with a caring resident's call, reporting a momma dog and her pups found near a local business. Hershee's pups have all found loving homes, and now it's her turn to find her forever family.
Housed in our admin offices, Hershee is “looking for new digs” aside from motherhood and is ready to be your perfect companion. Mastering basic house manners is one of her many talents!
She may seem shy at first, but beneath that initial reserve lies a heart full of love waiting to bloom. Once she opens up, she becomes a devoted companion, showering affection on her favorite person.
This beautiful girl also enjoys the outdoors, especially on sunny days where she can run and play. Let's give Hershee the loving home she deserves, where she can truly blossom and share her gentle spirit. If you're looking for a loyal and loving companion, consider welcoming Hershee into your life.

The Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114 requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event.
This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not.
We ask that you discuss this new state law with your child(ren).

Always dispose of pesticides properly
Pesticides and herbicides can be a convenient way to protect plants from pests and weeds. But when used or discarded incorrectly, these chemicals pose great risks not only to our ecosystem and wildlife, but also to our water, soil, air and human health.
The best way to avoid the perils of pesticides and herbicides is to stop using them altogether. But if you must use them:
- Always carefully read the product label and follow the disposal instructions exactly.
- Only purchase what you need and use it until it’s gone to avoid leftovers.
- Never discard these items in your trash bin for regular collection.
- Don’t ever pour them down sink drains, toilets or storm drains.
Pesticides and herbicides must be disposed properly at a household hazardous waste site. For a schedule of monthly drop-off events, visit sa.gov/swmd.

Animal Care Services joins Daisy Cares to feed hungry pets in San Antonio
Pet food donations sought as holidays near and needs increase
The San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) team is joining Daisy Cares, a local non-profit, to host a holiday pet food drive that will help both organizations support pet parents in need by filling their pet pantries.
Bags of dog and puppy food are especially needed in addition to other new or gently used pet items. All donations will be divided between the Daisy Cares pet food pantry and the SAACS Community Animal Support and Assistance (CASA) program, which uses a case management approach to assist pet parents in need with food, humane care support, and veterinary resources.
Residents can bring pet food donations through the end of November to Animal Care Services during regular business hours. SAACS is located at 4710 State Highway 151 and is open on weekdays from 1 - 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends (except on City holidays). All donations are tax-deductible.
