Happy Holidays, Volunteers! You know what gives us joy? You all! Every volunteer has made this year and our environment better by cleaning and monitoring streams, marking and clearing drains, and planting and maintaining trees. Thanks for all you do!

  Volunteers of the Year

This month we are spotlighting all the volunteers that really showed up and went above any beyond this year! Cheers to the 2022 Volunteer Groups of the Year!

Adopt-A-Drain: The Byas Family

Our Adopt-A-Drain group of the year is the Byas Family. They have two drains adopted in front of their house in Matthews. They have been sending in monthly reports of their drain inspections to ensure their storm drain is clean and clear for rain to enter. Thank you!

Adopt-A-Stream: The UNCC Trash Taggers

The UNCC Trash Taggers

The UNCC Trash Taggers led by Professor Andrew Goff have been a part of the Adopt-A-Stream program since 2018. Andrew and several dedicated students have pulled out about 9,300 pounds of trash just over the past year from all over the City of Charlotte! When we asked Prof. Goff about what motivates him to put his all into stream cleaning, he said "As a marine biologist living in Charlotte, I worry about my ability to preserve marine habitats and coastal communities. By cleaning up our local water bodies, we can try and mitigate the impact cityscapes have on our world's oceans and aquatic environments! Playing in a creek is something I fondly remember as a child, and these outreach events provide students with the same opportunity while improving their local environments.” Thanks for all you do! Go Niners!

Storm Drain Marking: Tripp and Reid

Tripp and Reid

Tripp and Reid have been diligently marking and maintaining storm drains in their neighborhood and surrounding areas in Davidson. Their efforts are helping to educate residents that the storm drains lead directly to our streams, and they are also helping to make sure drains are free of debris and litter. They also help keep eyes on our streams by sending in visual observations and holding stream cleanups. Thanks for being such well-rounded, environmental stewards!

Tree Maintenance: Bank of America

Tree Maintenance Bank of America

This Bank of America volunteer group, led by Jennifer Loftin, has participated in the Tree Maintenance Program since 2017.  They have two sites adopted that they maintain with routine maintenance. On top of their adopted sites, they have also helped with maintenance needs at other sites around the County.  CMSWS appreciates BOA’s commitment to protecting Charlotte-Mecklenburg's natural environment!

  Volunteer Monitoring
Chemical Assessment

If you are heading out to do a stream clean-up, you can also look at the water chemistry of your creek with our chem kits! These kits give you the opportunity to easily test for pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Turbidity, and temperature. You can request these kits by for anyone who wants to learn more about water chemistry. Just email STW-Volunteers@MeckNC.gov.
