June marks the beginning of an exciting summer season in Frederick County. We recognize  Pride Month, a special time dedicated to celebrating and supporting our LGBTQ+ community. This observance highlights the accomplishments and challenges of the LGBTQ+ community and affirms our commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all.

June is also National Immigrant Heritage Month. Frederick County is honored to host immigrants from around the world to share their personal journeys to Frederick County. All are welcome to attend to hear powerful stories of courage, community, and new beginnings. The event will take place on two Mondays, June 15 and 22, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the C. Burr Artz Library in Frederick.

County Shares Results of Child Care Feasibility Study and Launches Pilot Pre-K Scholarship Program

The news: Frederick County recently announced the results of the Child Care Feasibility Study, outlining a clear and urgent need for expanded access to affordable, high‑quality child care across the county. Frederick County is launching a Pilot PreK Scholarship Program is designed to help families enroll their 4-year-olds in a high-quality program of their choice.

Why it matters: Frederick County families deserve child care they can trust, afford, and rely on. Behind every statistic in this study is a child, a parent trying to stay in the workforce, a small business struggling to retain employees, and a community feeling the strain of a system stretched too thin. Today, we are taking meaningful steps toward real solutions.

County to Launch Organic and Food Waste Composting Program

The news: I am excited to announce that our Division of Solid Waste and Recycling recently purchased land that will allow Frederick County to expand composting, including organic and food waste composting.

Why it matters: This is another step toward creating the Frederick County of tomorrow – one that is environmentally resilient, economically sound, and committed to thoughtful growth. By expanding our composting program, we are not just managing waste differently; we are investing in a cleaner environment, a stronger local economy, and a healthier community for all.

Office of Economic Opportunity Strategic Plan

The news: The Frederick County Division of Economic Opportunity has unveiled the County’s new Economic and Workforce Strategic Growth Plan, a comprehensive roadmap designed to strengthen our economy, support workforce development, and position the County for long-term success in a rapidly evolving business environment.

Second Round of Feed Grant Recipients Announced

The news: Families across Frederick County will have increased access to nutritious meals, thanks to the award of $500,000 in Food Equity and Emergency Distribution (FEED) Grants. The grants will help 19 nonprofits, including food banks, pantries and religious organizations, to meet the increased demand for food services.

Why it matters: These grants help ensure that no one in Frederick County goes hungry. The Frederick FEED Grant Program directly supports nonprofits on the front lines. Grants will help the organizations expand food distribution, purchase necessary equipment, and meet the growing demand for food assistance in our community.

Parks and Recreation Community Grant Program

The news: Non-profit and not-for-profit community organizations looking to improve or build new recreational spaces are encouraged to apply for the Division of Parks and Recreation’s Fiscal Year 2027 Community Grant Program by August 14.

Why it matters: This grant program provides funds to eligible organization for recreational facilities for people in Frederick County. The grants help build and improve recreational amenities for the community.

Bringing Broadband to Rural Areas

The news: You are invited to attend a meeting on June 23 at 6 p.m. to learn about grant opportunities for expanding broadband access in rural areas. The meeting will take place in the Darrell L. Batson Community Room of the Walkersville Library, located at 2 South Glade Road in Walkersville.

Why it matters: These grants aim to help Internet Service Providers offer high-speed internet to rural homes currently underserved due to their distance from existing service lines. The goal of the upcoming meeting is to ensure eligible residents have the resources they need to benefit from improved broadband services.
